I had an epiphany last night..... If I were to purchase a 6131, would it not support the AMR codec? I had heard (but never confirmed) that European versions of Nokias do not have the AMR codec installed because it is not used in Europe. Anyone care to comment?

With plenty of memory and horsepower on these babies nowadays, I'd be really surprised if they kept AMR out. The fact that it's implemented in the phone does not mean that the phone has to actually use it. It will only use whatever codec the network it's talking to supports at any given point in time. Besides AMR, this phone probably has SAIC too.

Considering these phones are quad-band, yet still having a model specifically for North America, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't include AMR. It's craziness over there at Nokia.

Could you please explain what SAIC is?

Talked to one of Nokia's Reps today and the 6126 is not coming out this month people, They say it should hit the shelves sometime in June so we are going to have to wait a bit longer. :-(

BTW, both phones were approved by the FCC. I can't read Nokia's mind but I would say that it is more likely than not that AMR is included on the 6131.

SAIC is "Single Antenna Interference Cancellation". Like AMR, it's another technology which helps GSM carriers get more bandwidth out of their existing spectrum. Most of SAIC's functionality is in the handset itself. It cancels out crosstalk coming from an adjacent cell that might be using the same channel as the one you might be on. Basically it allows the phone to lock on the signal coming from the correct tower, even if other nearby towers are broadcasting on the exact same signal channel. As such it both improves call quality and helps eliminate dropped calls while increasing network capacity since carriers are better able to reuse their voice and data channels in any given area. Together, with a properly configured network, SAIC and AMR can almost double a GSM network handling capacity in the same-sized freqency block as compared to say 5 years ago... that without buying any additional spectrum licenses from the gov't. Basically, the same network can handle twice as many users as before without adding any more towers or freqency channels.

Secretly, that's one of the reasons that carriers have been keen on introducing more handset upgrade paths for their subscribers in recent years... they derive a benefit from doing so (not just the subscriber who gets a shiny new phone). Even though subsidized handset upgrades cost them money, by replacing as many existing older handsets being used on their network with newer ones capable of AMR and SAIC, the higher they can utilize their existing spectrum. An asset which is both limited as well as quite expensive.

There were several posts talking about the phone eventually available in canada on both Rogers and fido. Here's an example: http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=890437

Nokia says it will be available in 2Q which usually means the phone should come out by July 1st.
