The "OFFICIAL" I just bought an unbranded phone/flashed/flexed my phone noob guide
I myself had to do work to fix these common problems that you'll find when you buy an unbranded phone/flash or flex yours. Some things just don't seem to work right, fortunately there is almost always and answer. So, here are a lot of common problems and fixes to them.
I get a weird text message from _@ or ^@.
This means you have a voicemail waiting for you. Since you haven't got a branded flex on the phone, it doesn't understand what to do with the signals it receives from the network when someone leaves a voice message. This is also an easy fix.
All you need to do is a simple SEEM edit. For a how-to on this, check out poetic_folly's MotoGuide, found here.
The SEEM we need is 0032_0001.
Find Offset 02 and check bit 1, which blocks these features: Call barring, Call transfer, Info Services, do not read VM number from SIM, Voicemail ^@ text messages, Multi-Line Support, My Network List, Manual Network Search (most of these won't be of any use to US customers, don't worry about killing the rest of those listed features)
When I dial a 1 to go to my voicemail box, it says Voicemail Number Not Stored.
That's because it's unbraded, silly! The phone has no idea what service you're using and therefore can't dial a pre-stored number without it being stored. Go to Messages>Menu Button>Voicemail Setup>Voicemail No. and type
for T-Mobile: +18056377243
for Cingular: Go to Settings>Call Forward>Voice Calls>Voicemail and copy that number to here.
AH! My phone doesn't have it's voice dial thingy like normal, it's asking me about voice tags...
That's because when you reflashed to an unbranded flash/flex, it reverted back to factory Moto specs...no OBEYMOTO. To get this back in order, download the appropriate VST files from here, then upload them to the phone in a/mobile/vst (you might need to create this directory) or c/mobile/vst if you're on a PEBL. Reboot and happy camping.
My Mobile Web isn't working, I just get a browser configuration error.
Your phone doesn't know where to look on that big internet to connect, so it just throws an error.
well thanks sti. i appreciated it. problem w/ the moto forums is that its threads have TOO much info and its hard to find specific things. esp for noobs like i.
...and since n00bs cannot (or perhaps will not) search, having things in one place should help. Especially if this gets stickied or linked to in the wiki.
Now if we can get folks to read things like this BEFORE they buy, perhaps they'll be prepared for the fact that it's not always as easy as "pop in the SIM and it'll work just like a phone from their provider"

I don't want to learn to Mod - who does this for a fee?
O.K. I bought a couple L6 phones on Ebay (new, unlocked) that have been modified so that they are QUAD band.
The main problem w. these phones is they are limited to 5 VOICE DIAL entries. I don't care about what will be my back up phone, but my main phone needs to have at least room for 10 or 12.
Called Moto and tech support said L6 phones for the U.S. market can hold at least 20. He had no suggestion how to solve my problem. There is tons of free memory on the phone.
(He did suggest I do a master reset that would restore phone to factory settings. I am afraid doing so would also turn it back to a tri-band phone.)
I like the phone. Can anyone refer me to someone who can fix the phone to accept more voice dial entries?
Thanks.
...mike

3 T-Mobile lines on unlimited "family" plan - me, wife, partner. Averages out to be $44/line unlimited voice + $20 each for 2 BB pkgs. + $25 for 3rd BB +$5 for 400SMS on one line. [Remember 45 cents/min local calls?)
And just what makes this "official"? All this info is already on Howard Forums. I think you're confusing "official" with "useless".
Sometimes it's nice for noobs like myself who don't want to read through pages of useless "That's so cool!" posts to find what we want. So rather than "useless" this is more like "helpful."

Even though the moto inst book says I can load 100 songs, the software capped me at 50. I cannot see them on my mmc in Phone tools. Does this mean that they loaded internally in the phone?

V3i...I redid it again but still only 50 songs. I have a 512 MMC and lots of room left.
Most V3i phones come with the 50 song limit...an earlier production run had 100, but I would've thought the Moto literature would've changed too...well, sounds like you have a 50 song cap. You can either use the sounds menu or DAP.
