V3i some ringtones don't work, why?

Just had my v3i unlocked from t mobile and some of the ringtones won't work, Daft thing is I can play them on the phone but when I put them as a ring tone they don't work. They will work however if i put them as a ringer id for a contact in my phone book. Also any ringtones I download or bluetooth to the phone also don't work. Tried a master reset on phone that doesn't cure it. I hadn't been able to try phone before I got it unlocked so phone shop are questioning whether it was like that before being unlocked, though they are looking into it.

If it helps any the sounds seem to be in sections that work and don't work:-

    continental to siren work
    breakdown to T-Mobile 4 don't work
    alert to wind chimes work
    illumination to motio don't work
    any tone downloads don't work

Any ideas what to do or why that is, I am baffled?

    Cheers

first off make sure that you are converting to the proper format.
second to apply a song as a ringtone you must move the song from the TF card to the physical memory of the phone then you can select it as your ringtone.

Could be a corrupted TempToneDB.db file. If you use Motorola Phone Tools (I don't, got a Mac), I bet it will allow you to delete the MyToneDB.db and TempToneDB.db files from /a/mobile/audio/. Then power off-on and try to assign the tones.
