Garbled text messages

Quite an interesting problem I have... The text is garbled on incoming text messages sent from another cell phone. I've had people from Verizon and Cingular text message my phone and the body of the message is garbled... accented letters, both uppercase and lowercase, etc. It almost looks as if there is a conflict of character sets. However, my phone recognizes the sender and their number.

Meanwhile, all messages sent to my phone's @email.uscc.net address, to my mobile number from AIM, and text messages sent from USCC's website all come through fine. It appears to only effect incoming messages from other handsets. Furthermore, all of my outgoing messages get to their recipients correctly.

I've reset my phone numerous times but to no avail. Anyone have an idea?

i've got the same problem with just Cingular people (don't know anyone with verizon, and these are cingular blue people, not legacy customers). It happens only intermittantly, strangely when i preview it i can read it, but when i go to actually read it, its just jibberish.

Does this happen to incoming from *any* cell phone, or just from cell phones with other carriers? That is to say, are you able to receive coherent sms from other uscc customers?

I just tried sending a text message to my phone from another USCC user's phone and it came through perfectly clear. What do you think?

It's only happend to me once when it was actually a text; however, on many occassions I will get a PICTURE message from a particular person that will come as a text message with really weird charactors. She has USCC too.

That can happen if the picture was sent as an enhanced SMS instead of a true MMS; in that case, it either isn't supported by your phone or it isn't supported by USCC, or both.

How would it be sent as an enhanced SMS? My phones are the KX5 and V3c, so I don't think it would be a phone problem.

Don't know, I haven't used either of those phones. Just throwing ideas out there :-)

Not sure. I'd say call in and have it troubleshot.

Call in the problem. When this happens it is usually a problem with one of the carriers SMSC or MMSC server and they will track the problem down.
