Just got off the phone with Apple support. First guy was extremely nice, but hadn't heard a peep about the reported signal issues with 3G. I told him about apple's discussion board posting, the articles all over the internet, and this one. He noted it, and transferred me to a iPhone 3G product 'specialist.' The specialist, again nice, had not heard one peep about the 3G reception issues either, but was willing to listen to me. After going thru the different possibilities, he said he would forward the case to the engineers, but that we might not hear back from them.
He also said, interestingly, that the antennas for the phone were on top of the phone? Perhaps the bluetooth and maybe GPS/Wifi, but the GSM/UMTS antennas?
That would be odd as my phone's reception drops dramatically if I hold my hands over the bottom of the phone....
Anyway, I got a case up to engineering, supposedly. So odd that none of them report hearing of any problems.... EVERYONE CALL IN AND CREATE A CASE! :-)
thats obviously a load of crap, i saw a freakn video of a guy picking up the iphone3g by the bottom, loosing 2-3bars, setting it down again, and 2-3 bars gained in signal strength...lol
That is completely ridiculous. They had to have been told to "play dumb"...
I dunno, the average iPhone user wouldn't be wise to the fact that, if their phone has 5 bars of reception, it's actually EDGE reception and not 3G reception. All of my friends that went from original iPhone to the 3G one have not been able to tell the difference without me showing them... and then they get mad cause it's always in 2G. lol
I hope Apple isn't denying this problem. How could you release a 3G iPhone in 22 countries with a glaring defect like this and your solution is to hide the problem? How they could release with no reception in 3G and so many bugs at all is beyond me...

Precisely my point. They can't have their heads that far in the sand. Somebody has told Apple employees to STFU about it and play dumb. And, that pisses me off.

Geez, settle down folks. Just because YOU have a problem everyone does NOT.

I went to my local AT&T store the other day to talk with two guys who I have known for quite a while, and who REALLY KNOW THEIR STUFF. I mean, these guys are on top of things, and have never steered me wrong in the past. Anyway, I pulled one of them aside to pick his brain on whether or not he thought the bugs with the iPhone would be resolved before RIM starts blasting stores with the Bold. He looked at me like he'd been hit upside the head with a baseball bat. "Problems?.... What problems?.... blah blah blah blah blah...". The kid was in Robot-Mode. And he knows me!! Guys, I'm a suit (not that it matters, but I don't have time for this horse$h*t). I just shook my head and said "Oh, c'mon... don't even go there...".
This is how they treat a decent and loyal customer who has been buying their latest and greatest crap every twelve months for YEARS!!!!
I think I'm going to go and return my phone tomorrow what do you guys think?
Edit: I mean exchange; I think I'm going to go and exchange my iPhone for an identical one tomorrow what do you guys think?
I think you are wasting your time.
If you don't get stellar 3G reception in your area, swapping out yet ANOTHER iPhone is not going to make a difference.
Keep in mind that:
1) Your previous or current EDGE reception has practically NOTHING to do with 3G. (Obviously, Your previous Verizon or Sprint EVDO reception has nothing at all to do with it.)
2) The number of bars you get means very little -- there is no consistent standard for bars from one manufacturer to another.
3) The AT&T 3G map is not always accurate and does not differentiate between strong and weak 3G areas.
4) The download speed that Joe Shmoe reported that he got off his BlackJack last month at 2am while smoking a pack of Lucky's next to Sammy's Deli, means absolutely nothing.
5) The only way to ascertain the capability of both the 3G network in your area AND the iPhone 3G, is to compare the phone side-by-side with another brand 3G phone, at the EXACT same location, at the EXACT same time. Ignore the bars, judge the reception and test the DBs. Almost everyone who has done this has found the 3G reception of the iPhone completely in the normal range.
not only with apple iphone but even with other phones, I did notice when there is fluctuation in the signals, there is a voice breakage.
