Verizon & Palm Preparing next Firmware for 700W!!!

Sitting on the phone with Verizon right now for tech support with Wireless Sync... asked the technician if they were planning on supporting Tethering with the 700W anytime soon. He said that they have information that tethering will be supported with the next firmware release. He didn't know when the firmware would be released, but said it was definitely in the works!!!

This may be old news to some, but just thought I'd put it out there for those who haven't heard anything lately!

Ummmm ... the 700w doesn't run a Palm OS -- it's a Windows Mobile OS. Palm ain't in on this party

After reading over what OP said three or four times I still can't figure out why you think OP is talking about Palm OS.

OP's post is entitled, "Verizon & Palm Preparing next Firmware for 700W!!!"

Palm and 700w? Not happening!

Palm releases the firmware updates for the 700w as it is a Palm device. Even WM5 updates are released through the device manufacturor and not MS.

The last 700w update was released by Palm.

Interesting. As Johnny Carson said, "I ... did not know that."

However, the update itself would still be primarily authored and prepared by Microsoft -- regardless of what entity "releases" it.

Don't shoot the messenger... I inquired with the tech that I was on the phone with. He told me that, "Yes, it is in the plans for the near future to support tethering. This feature will require the release of the next firmware." I asked if Verizon was working with Palm on this issue and the person said, "Yes - this is in development and should be released very soon."

I also heard from my Verizon rep at work (we have a lot of Verizon phones) that Verizon is planning on making many of their phones tetherable that aren't currently capable. These plans are for release sometime this December...

Certainly no intention to shoot the messenger on this end ... and I think we're just getting caught up in semantics.

Bottom line: MS is going to create the firmware and Palm will release it (and might even tweak it a bit). It is still a MS Windows Mobile OS, with MS operating system and MS software and firmware.

Same here, and Palm makes the hardware.

Palm had a major impact on the WM5.0 software with the original release of the 700W. Today screen dialer, today screen web search, task manager hot key, and hardware silence switch integration were some of the many unique mods Palm made to the WM5.0 OS before releasing the phone.

what about threaded text? you think that its a good possibility that if indeed another update comes about that they might incorporate threaded text messaging at the same time (take in consideration that the new treo 750v has threaded text built in)?

Kind of another topic, but... It would be great if someone could get them to put a call or message reminder on this phone. I am no expert, but I have never seen a phone that you can't set to beep every minute or so when you have a missed call or a voice mail. I know there are third party solutions to this, but why should we have to pay $15 for such a commonly used feature.

This is why the post was started as a topic on the 700W - not the 700P - the one that supports tethering...
