Are the 3G Symbians as fast as S40?

I love S40 Nokia's, they're fast and good. I had a E50 and couldn't take the slow UI response. I hear that the 3G S60 Nokia's are as fast as the S40 ones. Is this true?

The 3G aspect of the phone does not affect the UI's speed whatsoever. I would say that their are a few s60 devices that are getting close to s40 UI speed.

Perhaps the fastest S60 phone is about as fast as a slow S40 but no, to answer your question, S60 still has some way to go to match the S40 platform for speed. (S60s i've used - N73, N80, E61, N70...and yeah the N91 briefly)

(watch how quite a few people deny this right away...)

The 6230 was disgustingly fast in the UI. I've used 6682, N80, N73, E62, and N75 since the 6230 came out. The 6682 and E62 were SLOW. N80 was faster, N73 was right around the same speed as the N80. The N75 blows them both out of the water in terms of quickness. Not equal to the 6230, but pretty damn close.

Also, one thing I've noticed is that if you reduce the amount of icons (be it folder or app) on each menu screen, the whole thing seems to move faster. I.e. I used to have 2 extra lines of folders and apps on my main menu. I've since moved folders and apps around so that there's only the 12 showing that show when you first enter the menu. Same for any folder. And I can notice a slight different.

i heard that the N93 has the fastest s60 menu at the moment... but N95 and E90 will be big contenders for this honor...

i am very long time 6230 user and i still use it once in a while, but after 7 months of E61 and now 1 month of E50, 1 week of N73 and 1 month of 5500, i have gotten use to the menu quirks of S60...

Its a tradeoff certainly. Though honestly, since about the n80 onward, the speed difference has been negligible in terms of useability... you may notice it, but it doesn't really make a difference one way or another.

Well worth it for how much you can do with an s60 vs an s40.

Nokia E50 and E62.
Both have single 235 mhz processors. Both run slow.

Most of the 3G phones have a 220 mhz processor and a 3G processor. The main processor does less multitasking, so the UI runs faster.

Well, you can't expect devices with operation system to be as fast as phones with relatively simple software. From my experience Symbian is getting faster and faster with every release.

My 8890 is fast as a mofo!

...and I recently had an E50 and toyed around with an E62 today. The E50 is much faster than the E62 imo. Of course the persons E62 probably didnt have theirs set up for maximum efficiency as Rcadden has suggested. Truthfully, I never set my folders up to not scroll until I ran into the E50. If it had to scroll once in folders it lagged quite a bit. It never bothered me with my E61 or N80 and I NEVER noticed it with the N73. I guess the first thing i'll do with my E62 is set it up for speed because from what i've seen it's sloasamo.

I still have my 6230 and there is no way a S60 can match it's speed. It may seem like it but no way. I've seen video of the E65 in action and it appears to be as quick as most of the high end v3's out there....but none of them compare to the 6230.

Agree. But it is faster than N91, N80, N73, E61!! I don't have 6230 to compare to, sold long time back. But 6230 is just dumb when compared to S60V3 anyways

I was never more than a back up when i got it anyway. I actually took it from my wife. If I needed to make a long phone call during an emergency though, I would take my 6230 over any S60 period! That little sucker is reliable as hell.
