HELP ***Micro SD card to transfer ringtones***

Help! I have an LG Rhythm AX585 and am having a horrible time. I can load mp3 and ringtones onto my card via my computer. I then insert the card into my phone and am able to take the mp3 off the card and load it to my phone. However, how do you apply an audio file (mp3) as a ringtone? I understand how to put mp3 on my phone and listen to them under multimedia but I have no idea how to set an audio as a ringtone. Any suggestions on how to do this?

I send them to myself via a multimedia message and just save them as a ringtone, but I am on Verizon so I don't know how this would work on Alltel.
