About time. The original Metro contract was with Bell Atlantic. (one of the precursors that merge to form Verizone Wireless)
It will only be for the platform area so it won't work going up and down the esculators or one the moving trains.
According to the article, full coverage should be completed in 2012 by the consortium of the four carriers. It takes this long because they can only work in the tunnels when the trains are not running and the third rail is not energized. That is about a two to three hour window on most nights except Fridays and Saturdays when the stations close later. During the winter months when there are snow storms, they move trains around all night keeping the tracks clear and parking trains in the tunnels. This is more difficult because there are only two sets of tracks throughout the system.
Hehe I was there just last weekend and tested to see if maybe thwy turned on a few cells or something, nope! Oh well, maybe 2 weeks I will be there again and it certainly will be nice to be able to call friends while meeting them at Metro Center!
