Why have they seemingly abandoned the GSM market? It really sucks because their most loyal fan base here in the U.S. is largely the GSM market to which they catered to for years. Why are they manufacturing mostly CDMA devices now? Do no other carriers want them?
I heard at&t bailed out and canceled devices like the motorola codename "ironman" probably because of pressure from apple and wanting to keep them happy. Not too strange though. Motorola's first smartphone the Q was originally a Verizon exclusive. It really changed the smartphone game, before it smartphones were bulky, ugly and mostly targeted at business users. You really saw the influence in rim devices as they immediately became slimmer, sleeker and more consumer friendly. They haven't totally abandoned the US gsm market though. The CLIQ their first ever android device debuted on T-mobile.
I agree with you on the smartphone platform, but is that all they are going to manufacture? I haven't seen them pump out a new flagship non smartphone device in sometime now and wonder if they are just going to focus on smartphones from now on. I hope that's not the case but the market seems to be moving that way.

Yah I'm pretty sure they are not working on any flagship flip phones/regular phones etc. They are putting their full weight behind android. The Razr3 would've been their best chance at a nice dumbphone but none of their high end non smartphones did very well since the original Razr so its not such a bad idea.
Perfert example of why people should still hold on to their V9(x) phones. Sadly...

IMO "dumbphones" are now becoming obsolete. The RAZR was the pinnacle phone just before the iphone craze.
IMO that pushed RIM as well HTC, Palm, etc. to produce more consumer features (camera, media player, etc.). The RAZR was a solid phone in just about all aspects however had it not been released before the smartphone (txting, media, browsing, etc.) craze it never would've reached the status it has.
The V9~ series is a good phone also however came into an already started smartphone era which is why it never went far. It was priced near/at smartphones at the time (much to do with having the similar camera, functions minus qwerty). IMO Moto knows how to build a solid device. Their issue is with software. I don't think that Java UI worked out too well for them.
Moto getting friendly with Big Red, I'm not surprised as of recent with their on/off peeing contest with Sprint and the GSM game is over ruled with Apple and Nokia.
I agree with Duke on they are putting their full weight behind android. WM has gone smaller niche and android is the only platform left to compete in Apple & Berry land. I'm sure they will continue with the low end flip for developing countries globally however like it or not I think that's all there for be for the "dumbphone".

The cliq is supposed to be a nice device with android, so I think they will still be in GSm but just with TMO since the whole droid vs iphone thing and at&t getting pressure from Apple.

Dumbphones actually make up the bulk of the market, and keeps the cell phone companies alive. Not the flagship or smartphones.
How awesome a phone is one thing, whether it's profitable enough to keep a company alive is another.

because Verizon knows it probably cannot get the iPhone, so Motorola Droid is like Verizon's savior, motorola on the other hand have had hugh trouble coming out with a killer device, and now the droid is exclusively on america's biggest network. A+A = A

True, looks like it will be a big seller, probally better than the G1 and Pre at their launches.
I don't think they've abandoned GSM at all. I think you might be surprised what they have to show especially since their leaked roadmap is full of GSM devices. The Cliq is GSM and was announced before the Droid. Their last two feature phones were GSM also.

I miss the old Motorola. I know they weren't doing well financially, but I have to admit their older phones were much better offerings. It seems like you have to go to HTC to get a decent phone these days.
