new Shuttle and "network" question for ringtones

Love the 1 day old shuttle!

Tried to d/l a couple of ringtones last night:
Bought 2 (1 and 2nd was 40% off).
downloaded first.

Presented with "OK" and "GET" .

I guessed "GET", and that caused the network to connect and downloading went okay.

For the second download, however, Pressing "GET" resulted in a message that I had exceeded my 24HR usage and it wanted $1.50 or some such message, so I canceled it and thought I had lost it.

Called cust svc and she said i should have pressed "OK", and I found that by trying to download it again it told me it was already paid for and just click x to download it again. did so, but the touch sensitive keys got to me and I "lost" it again.

finally found it in "alerts".

and clicked on it and chose OK but that just put me back to the alerts queue, so pressed GET which fired up the network and this time loaded without complaint.

So, I don't think I've had a "network" phone on VM, so
some newbie questions... :
Apparently we get some free usage each day ? yes?
All VM "downloads" come via their "network" ? yes?

so how much free usage, etc for network help.

it's been a while since I had a web capable phone (LG ENV2 on zaks')
so maybe a pointer to newbie stuff?

Thanks!!!

EDIT okay, looking through FAQ
I guess the answer is VirginXL @ 0.15 /day
Don't know yet about accessing the web or data charges...

There is no free web on VM, unless the URL trick still works.

yeah, okay - that link's link was busy so I'll try it later.

I would like to figure out how to access m.google.com/maps whether legally or not also the BofA maps of branches ( www.bofa.mobi ). That's about the extent of my browsing.

How do I do that since I can't download anything and does that get rid of all that stuff in Virgin XL that I have no interest in?

Thanks!

from the Shuttle menu select SURF THE WEB.

select OPTIONS

#7 Go to URL...
Type mini.opera.com

select OK

and it will initiate the download of the Opera Mini browser to your phone.

After the DOWNLOAD is complete....
Go to the MY STUFF Folder on the Shuttle MENU

select #7 MY OTHER STUFF

select OPERA MINI
*** If it's your first time using Opera Mini READ the information to learn about the features of the browser.

Enjoy.

Okay, very thanks for that info vmobi!

I initially put it off as I was only going to do one thing, but Openwave did such a bad job of a map ... And then i was searching for something on the computer and wound up with "VM is going to bundle OperaMini..." article (no date), so I went to virginXL, searched for opera and there it was and downloaded 4.2.

Much better on the map thing.

I tried doing it landscape/fullscreen and maybe I'll go back to it after I get the shortcuts down pat.

I did NOT read all that stuff as you had advised <DOH!> - does it exist anywhere that I could print it out?

I did find help and a great list of shortcuts, but again, that will mean a lot of writing - does that exist anywhere?

I have already gone through 2 $1.50 charges playing with this. but I don't think it costs much to play with browser shortcuts etc.

Yes, initial take is that it is vastly simpler than Openwave, and work better.

THANKS!!!

If you can point me to that info that I could print out, that will help - tough ramming a usb into the side of this thing!!! (no Canon drivers, either)

I think this will help....
http://www.opera.com/mini/
enjoy...

btw you can turn off the images on the opera mini browser which will allow for less data consumption.

If you find that you enjoy the opera browser and use more messaging than voice minutes... get the 14.99 (1000 mssg) texters delight plan with the $10 (50Mb) data add-on + 10cents per minute rate for voice.

After downloading Opera Mini.....Don't forget to unsubscribe from VXL, it charges .15cents per day.

Thanks for all that:

I won't turn off images as about all I will use this for is maps.

The Texters delight is no good as I don't text. I tried to check the "block all texts" but it doesn't seem to stay blocked, but I don't really care as no one's sending me anything!

I currently feed my minute2minute $20/month. ( 0.10/min plus 6.99/month), so, (thinking out loud here!) I guess that averages to 120 minutes.

I just went looking at plans and it appears that they have changed everything around and don't offer anything near to what I have now. I can add 5MB for $5/mo, 20mb for 10$/mo, or 50mb for 20$/mo

Decissions, decissions!

No-contract:
Monthly plan $30/mo (300min) + $5 (20MB data) = $35

what I have now $8/mo +$12 (~120min) + $5 (5MB data) = $25

before I came back to VM, I was using Verizon in a location that they couldn't/wouldn't fix and it cost me $105 to get out of my 2yr contract, which is why, I realized, these companies so love 2yr contracts! They should have let me out for free but they wanted "more time".

I also wanted to spend less and I knew i could under VM.

So I think, as a first step, I will go with my present plan and a $5 for 5MB data plan, and see just how much I use. I still have 0.508MB from my second 1MB auto purchase, and that included a bunch of playing with Opera Mini, so apparently less of a data hog than the original one.

Initially I will probably only use it to find BofA ATMs, second would be weather radar, but I just don't use/need my phone that much...
