Don't know if this has been asked, but I did do a search and came up with nothing. I was wondering if you could keep your existing number but change your calling area? I did call rogers and retentions and they both said its not possible.

No its not possible. Did you think they were lying to you or something?
Anyways, I had hoped such a thing would be doable myself, but no such luck. I don't know if there are technical limitations or what.
Why couldn't it be possible? Area codes like 905 and 289 can be for both Toronto and Hamilton...
Because for number portability to work, the system has to be SURE that the number is available on another network. Its not a problem when the area code stays the same. But If you have 905-555-2353, and you want 289-555-2353, that number might be available and it might not, but it isn't going to be a sure thing.
Furthermore, you can't port your number to a different calling area, and its possible that the change you want is just that - different calling areas.
it depends if the new place also has the same 3 #'s i guess
even though toronto and hamilton area code is 289
123 might be only available in toronto and not hamilton
just like in calgary, 403-590 is available as a land line in calgary
but in banff (also area code 403) the 590 part might not be available
Just to clear things up, I want to keep all 10 digits, not just the last 7 digits.
I have a toronto number which is 289-1234567 for example and I want a hamilton number exactly like 289-1234567
And yes toronto and hamilton numbers can both have 289 prefixes
No, Toronto is 416/647. The surrounding cities like Mississauga, Oakville, Markham, Niagara Falls etc are 905/289. Regardless, the next 3 digits after the area code determine what city and local calling area you have. So 289-123-xxxx will be a certain city, but 289-456-xxx could be an entirely different city.
