This is pretty huge, and could possibly start the domino effect needed in this country to have video calling become a standard function, if it catches on, which means they'll need to expand this to other platforms like WM phones that have the front-facing camera.
It's funny since we were just discussing this a couple months ago. And to expand on what I thought back then, basically Nokia has the upper hand right now with this feature and they need to pimp it out as if it were a selling feature of their devices, much like they already have with regular Skype in the past. If they advertise video calls on their devices and include trial memberships of the app then I think that could get them a lot more customers in the US.
What's more interesting is the press release does not state that video calling is exclusive to Skype but (and I could be reading it wrong) that it might be compatible with other channels like gtalk and AIM.

Yes that is huge. Finally front facing camera will be used (at least in USA) after years of being useless. I know other countries have video call on 3G but US is so behind.

I just don't see the use or need for this. Besides Fring having awful voice quality, the purpose of the front camera is about as useful as an appendix IMO

why does it support so few devices? at first i was thinking maybe cuz n95 and n82 had a gpu that it would only work on those, but the n97 doesnt have one. so why not for e71?
Agreed. I just prefer nimbuzz as a whole. Skypeout quality was far better for me with nimbuzz. I did install ver4 beta of fring today and tested a skypeout call and it was much better than I ever had before. Voice was kinda tiny sounding, but it wasnt choppy, which is the biggest problem I had before.
Id also love Fring to change the icons on the contacts to what network people are on. Everyone having a fring icon is a mess. Also for the life of me cant figure out how to dial a number thats not on my contacts to make a skypeout call.
Videocalling is a novelty, but its cool to have. Its like having it on a computer. You dont need to have it there, but its nice to have sometimes.

Tried it with my GF and it worked pretty well. I was on a really slow wifi connection though. This is useful for regular skype users like myself but I doubt its a reason to buy an n series. (I used the 5800 client).
