A few days ago I went to the nyc flagship to try out the 900, n97 mini and e72. No 900 available. I don't want to leave att anyway. Coming from my e71 to the e72, boy did the nokes manage to cheapen the feel and look of the phone, the graceful line is gone. 97 mini? Ugly color. Hated the keyboard. No onscreen qwerty. No way. Played with the 5800. Not bad for the price, but looked cheap.
Early A.M this morning I bought the 5800 Nav. ed. (much better looking) for $175 from newegg after rebate and cashback. Happy. Tide me over till nokia gets some grace. Friend calls. Incredible deal on refurb Iphones! Score a white 16gb 3gs for $20 after cashback. My att only goes up $13 more a month. Nice. So I have 30 days to get into touch. Res and Cap shoot it out. Or maybe it is the beggining of a beautiful relationship-keep em both.
Not selling the e71 till I see which phone is left standing. The nokes are heartbreakers- play you along and don't deliver. Sucks.

iphone destroys a 5800, I'm sorry but it does. Iphone destroys the n97 IMO (besides the camera). The amount of applications when jailbroken is amazing. Capacitive screen is so far superior to the resistive found on nokias.... I can type faster on the iphone's onscreen keyboard than the hardware n97.

lol yeah, my N97 craps all over my iPhone 3G. I hear a 3GS and jailbreak would solve most of the shortcomings of the 3G, though jailbreak isn't quite kosher on the work provided iPhone (we tried - too much trouble with our internal security procedures and the recently publicized vulnerabilities exposed by it - even if they're easily mended by changing the root pass, etc).
I would ebay that iPhone for profit and move to an N97 or N900. Droid was on that list, but after playing with it last weekend, I was disapointed.

Exactly, I had an n97 and I only have a 3g iphone and feel its superior - the usability, OS, and program availability of the iphone is just wayyyyyy beyond the N97, let alone a 5800.

lol no, the keyboard layout of the iphone is easier in my opinion (in portrait my thumbs can move quite a bit faster). The n97 is an easy keyboard to type on but the tactile feedback isn't great...
Back to topic though, resistive touch of the 5800 does not feel good. Listen I WANT to love nokia and dislike apple... but I've tried almost every nokia and symbian is just blah now. 5th edition needs to be revamped to actually integrate touch in an intuitive and user friendly way. I was an iphone hater, till I bought one, jailbroke it and played with it....
I find it hard to believe people that try both iphone and n97 and can say n97 kills it... Whatever though, this thread is about 5800 vs iphone and I'll be interested to see how the OP decides.

OP i agree my 5800 is an awesome phone with the features for the price. But its just holding me over till nokia wakes up and puts out something that really excites me. Not much of that from nokia lately. Though the n97 mini will be my next phone for the same reasons as the 5800. Its not a power house high spec phone. But its a solid build quality metal phone with great features.

To Roncito- it wasn't about cheap. I was willing to spend $$$ for an elegant tool- The e71 is the only phone in form and function that stands up to the Iphone, but it is not current. The e72 while more functional is a step backward in form. A real shame. It doesn't advance the art. The 97 and 97 mini just don't hit on all 8 cylinders like the jailbroken Iphone does.
To Uncanny- the point of the thread is to have some fun with disappointment and enjoy a little Black Friday madness.
Like Jm01dc I too want to love Nokia but it seems that they are all over the map and promise a lot but deliver less and less. All that being said as soon as the 900 hits for ATT I'm in. Back to Res and Cap.

i do agree, but its not because u type well i bet, its because the auto correction is that good, i breezed on my 3gs also so one day i said let me try without it and it was an eye opener my typing was more like the way charlie browns teacher speaks lol.

I agree with you, personally to me the n97 destroys the 5800, but again my opinion i had the 3gs and its a great device, i also liked the n97 alot because it gave me things the 3gs just couldnt, but now i have the n86 and the bb 9700 which i think is a great device so far.
