I have heard of some people posting that they have recieved letters from Verizon saying that they have used up to much data in one month.

How much are you using/planning on using?

Yes, they can track it. How you ask? Well, can you tell the difference between a voice and a computer modem? Well so can verizon's computers. And not only that, when you connect to their NA, you have to LOG in first, so that would be a good/simple way to track it.....

I used NA for connection to my laptop. I hope they don't cancel that option for me. I have 800 minutes a month. If they don't want people using it for that, then they shouldn't sell the equipment and software that allows you to use your phone for that purpose. I would assume if they stop allowing you to do that, it would then void the contract you have with them as they changed your plan without your permission.

It wouldn't void your contract, since when they sell you the equipment, they say "YOU MUST HAVE A DATA PLAN" and what you have is a VOICE plan.

Go view their website on NA, it says it all over that you MUST have a data plan.

Yes, you can signup for their $80 unlimitted plan.
They also have special data plans, I forget what they are, but it is like $35/month for like 250 data minutes, or something along those lines.

That is for their high speed broadband service. I just use the slow 14.4 speed over voice. I guess if they did give me grief, I would just switch over to the high speed plan for $80.

“Unlimited” NationalAccess is limited to 100 megs per month.
Verizon may cancel your account if you exceed that limit.

For several years I had been a high end Verizon customer with 2 accounts, paying over $300 per month including $80 per month on each account for “Unlimited” NationalAccess. I used NationalAccess only for ordinary web surfing, no music or video downloads or anything big like that. It’s easy to use 10 megs per hour during ordinary web surfing. It turned out that “Unlimited” NationalAccess is limited to 100 megs per month and I got the letter below.

Because of the horrible brutal lousy treatment I got from the Accounts Investigations department at Verizon, and because of the many other problems that I have had with Verizon, I cancelled my account that was off of contract, stopped using the other account, and put the other acount on a $15 per month “save plan” until the contract expires when I plan to cancel that account too. A “save plan” turned out to be cheaper for me than paying the $175 ETF Early Termination Fee.

I used to be a “cheerleader” for Verizon but not any more. I now pay $15 per month for unlimited 1x with Sprint (soft capped at 2000 megs per month) and am much more satisfied with the service at Sprint than I ever was with Verizon.

I think it's unreal that Verizon does this. Unlimited should mean that: UNLIMITED! Incredible.

Wow, They really screwed you over. They are so stupid. You paid that much a month, and would rather lose you as a customer, than to let you browse the Internet.

I used to be paying the $80/month fee for unlimited EN/NA, but I discontinued it. My data services business is going to AT&T wireless, for this and a few other reasons. Here are some of the others.

1. AT&T wireless has better _data_ coverage because data roaming actually works (unlike VZW where 1xRTT data roaming doesn't which leaves huge gaps in their data coverage).

2. VZW still lacks a Bluetooth phone for data connectivity. Yes, the V710 is coming... some day... and much of its functionality will be crippled. I don't want to use a PCMCIA card with an antenna sticking out the side of my laptop and I certainly don't want the awkwardness of a data cable. My laptop has built-in Bluetooth, why not use it?

It's really pretty bizarre. I had my first Bluetooth phone in June 2001 (Ericsson R520m), and three years later Bluetooth still isn't available on VZW.

3. EDGE is faster than 1xRTT.

4. UMTS is faster still. Yes, the UMTS coverage is limited, but I can always use EDGE outside of the UMTS coverage area. UMTS supports making a data connection during a voice call and initiating or receiving a voice call while a data connection is running with no disruption to the data connection.

I do still have VZW for voice, and will until my contract is over (about two months).

Sprint does this too, but their “soft cap” is 2000 megs per month instead of the 100 megs per month that Verizon uses. 2000 megs per month is reasonable as long as you’re not downloading music, videos, lots of large files, etc. But Sprint does not allow “tethering” a computer to a cell phone using 1x. (I have switched to DSL/WiFi for my computer Internet connections that formerly used NationalAccess.)

Eventually Verizon admitted that I had not violated the requirements of the Verizon Customer Agreement. I had only violated their unwritten 100 meg per month "soft cap" limit on the “Unlimited” plan.

Verizon never apologized for the grief they wrongly gave me. They just threatened to disconnect my service if I ever broke any of their rules, written or unwritten. They said that it was OK for me to continue using NationalAccess as I had in the past, but that at any time I could be subject to having my account disconnected and/or have additional Inquisitions at the hands of their ruthless Account Investigations department. Well foo-foo that!! :laughs:

There have been a few interesting threads here about this issue, and there have been, I'm sure, scores of telephone conversations and emails since this issue was raised here.

I'm gathering that if your plan is old enough, they will simply leave you alone because they know that it was a selling point for a few months when Express Network/NA became such a big deal. They were actually trying to get people to use it so word of its excellence would spread.

Luckily for me, I got in on it at this stage.

Now, however, I think Verizon regrets it because so many people are doing it and it takes so much more bandwidth for a data call than it takes for a voice call.

I don't think there will be any kind of witch hunt or Inquisition over it; however, the people I've spoken to say that they are beginning to solve their little problem by refusing to sell data connectivity software and cables unless you show a Verizon approved data device on your plan and show a Verizon approved data plan on your record.

So if you're using NA MOU now, then don't attract attention and don't abuse it.

Wow. Does this same cap apply in the NoVA EVDO footprint?

If it does, then we are back to wireless Internet not looking like such a good deal. It was looking pretty good there for a couple of months, even to the point that I was thinking of dropping other connectivity services.

But I won't be able to hack it w/100 megs cap.

I mean, a single beta download from the MS FTP site would take care of that 100 megs immediately.

<-Starts up w/the emails again.

I went to the ATTWS site, and I can't find those data plans. How about a link?
