Lightbulb LG 3200 , Real midi ringtone Uploads .. I did it !

LG vx3200 real midi ringer upload, I did it .. NO HEX editing

using bitpim 7.13 & a USB to Serial cable

( my cable is the 4500 cable from the vzw MOK, with the keys sanded off )

BitPim setting for LG vx4500

open the file system

right click on at the top '/' .. make subdirectory 'user'

right click on user .. make subdirectory 'sound'

right click on sound .. make subdirectory 'ringer'

right click on ringer .. choose new file

this opens the upload window

navigate to where your midi ringtones are stored and choose one

bitpim will write the file into your phone and the file system

repeat the process for another tone..

my 3200 seems to be size sensitive , tones 30k and under seem to do best, i

got some loading errors with files bigger than this. i did get one on, but

it was troublesome

Now go up to the brewringerindex.map and delete it

(download/dloadindex/brewringerindex.map) Just the *.map file NOT the whole

tree

now goto the top '/' (root) right click and choose 'reboot phone'

the phone will reboot and create a new brewRingerIndex.map with your tones

in it

right click on '/' ( filesystem root ) and choose refresh

bitpim will update the file system tree you are looking at and

brewRingerIndex.map will re-apear

if you right click on the new brewRingerIndex.map and choose hexdump

you should see your tones listed

close that window

unplug your phone

and goto phones ringtones and scroll thru it your tones will be there

object

It seems that the 3200 file system is very close to the 4500 file system

I have two goals left to accomplish

I want to put my wallpapers on the 3200 (wifes phone) [ well i put some on

there but the phone doesn't see them, YET ! ] even when i deleted the

brewImageIndex.map and rebooted , it just created an empty map file

identical to the one deleted . I think i put them in the wrong place,

I want to use my own choice of pictures as message objects on both phones (

lg3200 lg4500 )

I copied a received msg object from the 3200 and placed it in the same

place on the 4500 and it was there.

i could view and use it just like an original installed

object

Doh.

I can't believe I didnt try deleting and letting the phone re-build that .map file. I had been hex editing it trying to get it to work, and couldnt get past 1 file.

This phone will play mp3s, BTW, renamed to mid, but the volume control does not effect them for some reason.

Image Format

I'm also very interested in changing the wallpaper on my 3200. I've been reading through all the posts and have frantically downloaded Brew, Bitpim 7.14 and have a good knowledge of CG and Photoshop. I would like to help figure this out too but have more to learn about an acceptable image format. I know 128X128 and 65K and I've created BCI files but I'm not sure I'm on the right track with making an image file that will work. Any help would be great.

Also are you putting the image files in your user Dir? The only thing I see is the wallpaper.bit in /downloads and it's a big file so are all the images within that?

the file size for wallpaper.bit appears fixed per phone base on the display size and bit resolution of 16bit 65k colors

the 126 byte msg object file became a 32k wallpaper.bit

the majorty of the file being blank ff bytes

when i change to a full image it was still 32k but almost all the bytes had data instead of filler space ff bytes

I belive the key for the lg3200 is in figuring out the mediapic.000 format which varies in size with the object

but will allow us to insert multiple files into the sms directory and choose which one to use as wallpaper or as a msg object to insert

on my lg4500 a 12k bmp file from fotoshare became a 37k wallpaper.bit file 12k 256 colors

and a 45k bmp also became a 37k wallpaper.bit file

the 45k was a 24 bit file 64 million colors , 37k is consistent with 16 bits as 120 * 130 64 k colors

and 32k is consistent with 128 * 128 at 16 bit data per pixel

Thank you so much for your help!

I was able to upload midi files for ringtones and they work great! It was pretty easy to figure out how to delete them as well (just reverse the directions, basically!)

Thanks again, this was a wonderful resource and my wife and I are excited to be able to choose our own ringtones!

I have a true USB cable for both my 7000 and my 6000, been undecided as to buy a cable for the wifes 3200. What exactly did you use to sand the tabs/keys off?

Just curious in case I do decide to start messing with her phone.

thanks in advance.

I don't know about sanding keys or anything like that.

I do know that the above procedure worked on my vx3200 with a simple vx6000 cable that I got from radio shack. It is the Cable #19 for LG Models 1200, VX6000 from Futuredial. It worked just fine with my VX3200. It is model #17-792.

I used Bitpim and the above directions to make it work. You'll also need the driver software which I easily found on the software section of these LG forums.

Good luck!

Hmmm....I have the usb cable for my work phone (6000), and it doesn't fit in the 3200. I will have to make a trip to Radio Shack I see.

Thanks for the info on both the cable and the program.

when you check the ports settings on a 3200..

it says rsc232 , it's a standard serial interface, so it uses the cable with the convertor chip in the little black box

NOT a straight thru USB 'universal serial bus' cable

it's confusing for some people because they are familar with computer hardware ..

they get a PC, or laptop and a phone.. and they don't know that USB is less than 10 years,

most new laptops don't have the 9 pin DIN plug for 232 , only USB or firewire connectors,

yet phone protocols and MODEM signals have been in use for over 30 years, and 232 is the standard not USB..

so the MFG make conversion cables

USB is the standard for most newer digital electronics , like cameras

but i have a digital camera with a 232 interface..

for the first few years scanners were available, it was hard to find anything but 232 until mfg standardized a new paralle interface with 2 way comunication.. in the beganing Paralle was one way to the printer only

Yeah, thats what I figured. After reading up on the cable from Radio Shack.

No problem, I'll just hit the store if and when I decide to mess the wifes phone up...lol

Thanks for the info though.

ebay cables seem too be of inconsistanet quality

and you have to try different drivers to find the one that works..

IMO it just much better to get a quality cable from RS or the VZW MOK

I have the mok cable ( mobile office kit )
