EDIT: I amy have been overjoyed a bit too soon on this one. But, please try it and post your results. My instructions may be a bit unclear as well. The value that needs to be changed is in the phone key. The values in the vol key do not need to be altered.

I'm not sure if any of the registry settings will make a difference but I have a C500 (SMT5600) so maybe they could be compared to the MPX220.
In HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/Phone (values) I have 'Vol' set to 52428
In HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/Volume (values) the value contained in the key 'Volume' is increased/decreased using the phones up/down volume button.
Volume=0 bar, volume key=0
Volume=1 bars, volume key=858993459
volume=2 bars, volume key=1717986918
volume=3 bars, volume key=2576980377
volume=4 bars, volume key=3435973836
volume=4 bars, volume key=4294967295
I'm sure there are probably other volume settings so if I find them I post them up.
Also remember to take a note of any changes you make as the MPX220 could be totally different
Remember that you can do a search through the registry using Menu-Tools-Find, Find What='Vol or volume' and then tick keys, values and Data.

OK.
In HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/Phone (values) I have 'Vol' set to 52428
SETUP: In my MPx220 this value was set to 39321. I first made a light change and replaced my value with 52428. I played a file on my laptop with the audio at a murmur. Very low, I could not hear it from 5 feet away. After making a call to the MPx220 I placed my landline in front of the speaker. I left my office and answered the line I heard the audio loud and clear. Because I have very good hearing I decided to test the other extreme.
I turned the audio up to a conversational level on the laptop. I adjusted the value of the key to 4294967295. I placed another call to the MPx220, and the audio was deafening. By goerge I think we have it. Please someone test this out. All you really need is the PHM Registry Editor. I found it free pretty easily so can you.
Click download PHM Registy Editor VER 0.70
Change 'Package selection' to 'Smartphone 2002/2003 (ARM/PXA)'
Download and Install cab file to MPX200 as normal.
You just need to change the registry key 'volume' to contain value 52428 or higher.
The key 'volume' can be found in the registry at HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/Phone (then click Values)
Also, the volume buttons don't affect that value. Thus, it doesn't seem likely that the particular value controls the earpiece volume. I like the initiative, though!
OK - look in key /HKEY_CURRENT_USER/ControlPanel/Volume/ and at value for "Volume" - this one tracks with the volume up/down buttons. With the volume set to the highest, the registry value is maxed out at 4294967295.

The volume button affects the 'volume' key in HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/Volume which is probably only used to adjust the earpiece volume.
It's the 'vol' key in HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/Phone that I thought might increase the total phone volume.
Did everyone change the phone value and not the vol value? I would find it hard to believe that I perceived such a drastic improvement and you guys don't see any. Back to the experimental.....
martin...,
BTW If you get a chance couldyou post whether or not youu have manual network selection on the SMT5600? If so, could you post the values of the keys associated with the network selection? Damned Cingular, took it away from us.

I changed the control panel/phone/vol value. No diff.
