BEWARE - BlackBerry Unlimited not unlimited, especially when you're using BBOS4

All,

I got a $300 BlackBerry bill because I went over 25 megs on my "UNLIMITED" BlackBerry plan.

Be careful of using a BlackBerry upgraded to BlackBerryOS 4 on the Rogers network. Data usage goes up dramatically if you upgrade to BlackBerryOS 4.

Transcript of Relay voice-to-text phone call (since I am deaf), made through a service similiar to AT&T www.relaycall.com free service for the deaf... I have removed my phone number and postal code, below.

(relay calls sure are handy for keeping conversation transcripts.)

Quote:
(1 877 226 7243, press 1, press 1, wait)

Dialing 877 226 7243 (automated message playing, now pressing 1 and 1) ...music playing [ON HOLD]
....i have snanra online ...how can i help you today ga

okay the number is ### ### #### and my name is mark rejhon spelled r e j h o n ... and the postal code is ### ### .... [HOLD] I notice on my bill that I am charged 217.62 for data, yet I am on the 60 dollar per month unlimited plan. The charges appear to apply to december 5th through dec 22nd. Can you explain why I am charged for data inside rogers network even though i am on the unlimited plan? GA

certtinly sir the plan you are on there is a cap of 25 mg and if you lookon page 5 from november 19th up until december 22nd inclusive you get up
to 25 mg which is considered unlimiete but once you go over the 25mg you are
charged 7 dollars per meg and the amount of mg you used in theattime period
were 56,685 also to mention you were travelling in the states between de
vember 12 and the 13th and yuing the data service you were charged oone cent p
er kiloiite your 60 dollar plan doesnt cover you while trtvelling in the u.s
ga

I did not ask about my travelling data. I only asked about my data usage inside the rogers network. I do not understand why 25 megabyte is considered unlimited for the in-rogers network usage. GA

im not sure àwith what i just explained you re not understanding the 60 dollar plan that you have on the rogers netwoerkis capped at 25 mg we do not offer what you are thinking whats considered unlimited the cap of 25 mg is c
onsidered unlimited øbecause that is alot of megabytes but you went over the 25 cap and like i said you used 56,000 ga

Hold on for a moment please. From what I understand, I do not see that Rogers should limit to 25 megabytes considering the new Blackberry operating system version 4 uses more data. I guess I may have to switch to Bell Moàbility after this month, once I verify their cap. Anyway, unless I can figure out a solution to this, I guess that's all for now. GA

im sorry to hear thatð you had or was told that the 60 dollar plan was unlimited but the infommation is available on our website www. rogers .com under blackberry and there it will state the two plans that we offer and under the 60àollar it is mentioned that there is acap of 25 meg s 7 dollars thereafter hope that info is helpful ovsiously we would not like to see you go to bell but currently at this time we dont have such a package thank you for you rinquiry ga

In the future, have Rogers find out what to do with the increased data use by the users of the BlackBerry operating system version 4 which just came out recently. I'm concerned about that. Anyway, I have all the information I need. I may call back later after further research or to cancel, but not on this phone call. Thanks and bye bye for now SKSK

ok have a good day thanks again sk

[Relay Call Terminated]

I really prefer to stay on Rogers, as the Rogers BlackBerries are superior, but I cannot afford to continue to pay 300 per month for BlackBerry service. And I don't want to downgrade to BlackBerryOS 3.7. T-Mobile and Cingular users on unlimited are not being charged extra for using BlackBerryOS4.

I also heard of other Rogers users not being charged extra when going above 25 megabytes (since it is supposedly some kind of a 'soft cap', but for some reason, I got hit with the $300 bill (of which approximately $250 of the bill should be only $60 -- Paying $7 per megabyte is ricidulous.).

Does anybody have any suggestions to fix either of:
(1) BlackBerryOS 4 tendancy to gobble more data than BlackBerryOS 3.7?
(2) Reducing my bills? There's no so-called "Unlimited" plan without a cap (I'd be willing to pay slightly more).

And I send less emails than the bosses, so my usage isn't abnormal at all. BlackBerryOS4 does use more data than older BlackBerryOS, though. Wireless PIM/BES synchronization and all.

Rogers needs to do something about it before they officially release BlackBerryOS 4 to the public. (Some companies are lucky enough to be in the RIM beta tester programs, I've heard similiar reports of people being hit by sudden increases in data usage, so this will be a bigger problem for Rogers in the future)

[Edit: Fixed phone number typo]

I should add that November-December billing period is the first month I exceeded 25 megabytes. I was not even given a warning about exceeding cap.

I made a second phone call to Rogers through Relay service (similiar to www.relaycall.com) and I have pasted this transcript:

Quote:
877 226 7243 (1,1) ringing ...1 2 automated message at... rogers wiresless data service please hold for assistance your call may be recorded for quality purposes it s ringing ...1 thank you for calling rogers pat speaking ga

Hi Rogers, I am calling back because of my BlackBerry bill. My number is .. ### ### #### and name is mark rejhon spelled r e j h o Àn.... repeating r e j h o n .... and postal code is ### ### .... for bringing my record up. GA

how may i help you ga

certainly, I need some help figuring out why I have been singled out for being charged with data above 25 megabytes on a plan that was supposed to be unlimited. However, I talked to my coworkers, who used more than 25 megabytes, and apparently they have not been charged. Why am I charged for data above 25 megabytes while they are not? I know that the last customer service explained to me that there was a cap of 25 megabyte, but what I know now, does not sound fair. GA

the 60 dollar data plan do cap at 25 mega and 7.00 per mega there after we do have a promotional price plan started a couple months ago for a customer tooose data plan that is 40 dollar data plan and that plan was unlimityed for the first 3 months for me onto inqwuire about your vfriend plan i would need there cell number to look up at their packages cause all price plan at 60 dollars do cap at mega ga

Hum, I will have to ask them if they are on the promotional plan. Would they qualify for a promotional plan even though they have been using a BlackBerry since last april? That promotion was two months ago, so they wouldn't have qualified? GA

no they wouldnt qualify and to be honest with you mark i need to look at there account to have a better understanding of there packages ga

ok, I need to call you back on this. Should I ask for your name next time or just talk to the next representative when I call back? GA

the next representative hopefully youll get a hold of me but another rep would ble to assist you and ill put a note on your accoubxx account on what we discussed today ga

Okay, thank you and bye bye for now SKSK

ok bye sk

[Relay Call Terminated]
I now need to find somebody who has been on Rogers 60 dollar plan for months, exceeded 25 dollars, and had not been charged for extra data. Are you one of those people?

I have been a BlackBerry user since early 2001. RIM 950 under a different account, then 7280 since April 2004. (Although under different account numbers, I don't think anyone looking at my current BlackBerry account sees my old BlackBerry account, so I might have lost seniority, because the 950 is not a cellphone and the 7280 is a cellphone.)

I would think Rogers should refund the charges, at least on a one-time basis, because Rogers has not been charging other people for over-data usage for BlackBerry unlimited, meaning 25 megs is normally a softcap.

After that, I would simply downgrade to BlackBerryOS 3.7 to make sure it does not gobble as much data, at least until Rogers has figured out how to cope with the increased data by BlackBerryOS 4 users without upsetting users with excessive bills.

I'd like to stay on MAD SEEG, but $300 for one month is too much. Any suggestions?

Check your last few bills to ensure that you haven't gone over your 25MB softcap first. Then call CS.

A little off topic, but the $40 data plan is now being offered with unlimited data for the first three months (as long as you add it to your account before the end of Jan). I just confirmed w/ Rogers data that unlimited is truly unlimited for the three months.

What is? I just recently moved, and don't have my DSL set-up yet, so I subscribed to the $40 plan, and use it to surf on my laptop/6230 until I get a wireline internet hook-up. It's great for me!

Man though, you don't realize how much data you use surfing html! in a period of a hour or so, I managed to use up close to 5 Megs!

Advice

Mark I have some advice.

1st) When speaking to any rep regarding features/billing, begin first by getting their rep id & name last initial.
This way you got them by the balls; whatever they quote to you is golden & they now must document it.

2) have them lookup anothers account and look at the SOC (service order codes) for the features that ur supposed to have, and whom actually applied them;
Have the rep ur speaking to email that rep and document this action in their notes on ur account, that way another rep on a future call to resolve this issue WILL allow better cohersion for the new rep. BTW, their rep id usually is their network phone call number, ei if I'm 2642 then rep 2854 can call me on his other line using 2642 (something to that end).

Hoping you find out a solution to this mess, and good luck, cheers.

Every piece of collateral says that "Rogers reserves the right to limit usage to 25 mb per month".....I'm sorry I don't agree with fighting this.

I do however believe that it shouldn't be called unlimited....

Prom1, thanks for the advice.

I have won Small Claims court before. What do you think are my chances of using Small Claims court to press Rogers on the deceptive use of the "Unlimited" label -- what would you think are my chances?
