E-71 + Fring=awesome!

Greetings, all,
I am a newbie with my first smartphone, I got it a couple of weeks ago and I downloaded Fring. I am stationed in Afghanistan and my wife is back home in Texas. I just talked to her, crystal clear, with no dropped connections, when doing the cellular thing was so hard to do and sometimes impossible. I do WLAN searches everywhere I go, and there are a lot of hotspots all over this place that I can use and take advantage of. The way Fring works in VOIP, Fring is the $**t! Also it was supposed to use Skype or something like that to connect the call, but its not using anything, its just a straight call from my E71 to her cell.

The only thing I don't like about my E71 is the Contacts, I had a list of over 100 and it allows me to put them in groups, but it keeps them in the original list outside of the groups also, which means still having a big clutter. Is there any program that allows me to manipulate contacts and groups the way I need to?

Thanks,
Roberto

I dont get how you are using Fring without Skype to talk to her on her cell?

I mean you are using WiFi for connectioon but how are you calling to your wife? Using what contact? Her cellphone? Her aim? Her msn? How?

Because i also use E71 and fring and without having a Skype account which has Skype contacts, i am not able to do anything...you cant just dial a phone number using skype, can you?

Also how on earth are you finding tons of free hotspots in Afghanistan? Lol...i cant find a working free WiFi in downtown of the largest city of Canada...and you are mountanous afghanistan O_O

E71 + Fring

Roncito,

I have an Afghani service named Roshan. They come into American Installations and sell sim cards for cell phones with their service, you just have to buy minutes, just like most of the rest of the world but not the US.

Redfox1,

I have no idea how it works. Up until a couple of weeks ago I had never heard of Symbian or Fring. Reading in this forum, it pointed to their website, and I downloaded directly to my phone. When I open Fring, it opens up the contacts, I choose a contact and the option "connect" opens up, I click on it and that's it.

About the hotspots. Every installation here has dozens of contractors from all over, but mainly from the US, everybody making a lot of money from Uncle Sam. The locals come in and sell internet services with a satellite dish and they also sell TV cable. These services are sponsored by the US Govt agency (AAFES) that controls retail services like Subway and Dairy Queen, which are here. Bagram is a huge Air Force base with tons of services.
Well, the contractors have to communicate with their offices in CONUS or elsewhere by using the internet services. There are so many of them, that the air is a hodgepodge of secured and unsecured networks.
The E71 makes it very easy to scan for networks by using connection manager.
Everything I just said also applies to Iraq. Before coming here, I spent a year stationed in Baghdad, and cellular and internet services are exploding there. The bad thing about it, is that the bad guys have access to the same services, there and here, and this makes it very hard to find them.
Off topic, another service that makes a lot of money off us, are Car Rental services, renting any type of vehicle you may want, armored or not. There are tons of Armored Toyota Landcruisers, Chevy suburbans and Ford F-250's here.

Regards,
Roberto

The only way Fring is free is if you call a computer contact right? I use Fring to call my mom's computer for free sometimes.

Yeah that's what I thought too, Attera.

I can call to other people on their PC (me and them using Skype) and this will be free.

If i wanted to call to someone's actual number, i think SkypeOut credit or regular airtime has to be used, no?

Or maybe OP never meant to say it was free. Maybe he was just praising the sound quality of Fring.

E71 + Fring

Redfox,

"It seems to me you are using regular airtime to make calls to your wife."

This is entirely possible, but for the last 8 months I have been calling, reception has been terrible, with several drops just to complete one call. Now, its crystal clear with no drops, no background buzz, and I know they didn't upgrade the same raggedy cell towers.
If you know how to verify what I am using during the call, let me know.

Attera,

"The only way Fring is free is if you call a computer contact right?"

I don't know, I just started using this.

Regards,
Roberto

Fring is awesome! I used it with Skype while I was in Japan in the summer with my N82.

I was also not aware you could make calls to landlines/mobile phones without the use of Skype.

Yeah i dont know what he is using exactly to call landline and other phone number without use of skype.

I mean how the heck does he even punch in the numbers to dial...fring doesn't let you dial numbers...so its still a mystery how and using what he's able to call without use of skype

E71+Fring

Redfox1

This is what is going on.

1. I pointed my E71 web browser to the Fring site and downloaded straight to the phone.

2. When I open the Fring icon, it goes into "testing the network connection" and I can see my WiFi name.

3. It then goes to the top of my contact list, showing a "Fring test call" which allows me to enter a phone number with the key pad. I don't use this.

4. I simply scroll down the contact list to the contact I need to call and I click on it. No need to enter numbers, just choose from the contact list.

I took pictures of each one of the screens involved in this process. If I find out how to post a pic, I will do that.

Because of the test Fring does on the network before going to the contact list, I believe I am doing VOIP calls. The other thing is the call quality which I didn't have before, but of course, I can be mistaken, I don't know how to check which way the calls are being routed. I had never heard of Fring or used a smart phone until about a month ago. But I am sure happy I found it, Lol.

I don't understand fring and havent looked into skype at all but if your tellin me next time im playing in the sandbox and can bring my phone from here to afghan/iraq or where ever else they decide to send me and call back home to a computer or even a phone for free im gonna do a backflip. I can't imagine AT&T or any other company letting this fly but damn it would be amazing.

PS Seems like bagram has grown a bit since I was there in 06' hahaha.
