Well it took me the better part of a day to figure out why this wouldn't install on Windows Vista. After reading KB articles I came to the conclustion that the Verizon Wireless team didn't create the drive install package correctly for the USB modem.
So I have updated the INF file for anybody that cares to try it out. I have verified that this does infact work on my XV6700.
For all of those people wondering what was going on the VZW team forgot to include "include=mdmcpq.inf" that in all the sections listed in the KB article at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/837637. Apparently this really didn't matter because the usbser.sys driver was already in place in Windows XP and below but in Windows Vista the include section needs to be listed.
If anybody thinks this will help out any of the other forums please provide a link to this posting.
What process did you use to install it? You can do the right click and install in Windows Vista for some reason, however if you connect the device then when it pops up for the windows driver you point to this driver instead it should work.
Thanks a lot for this fix. It worked perfectly for me with my Sprint PPC-6700 on Vista where the Sprint packaged one gave a file not found error during installation on Vista (but worked in XP).
It looks like this was Microsoft's fault, not Verizon (or Sprint). The Verizon file you modified was line-for-line, character-by-character identical to the Sprint one, except for the lines you added, and a string which was the name of the device.
Too bad the companies are so incredibly lazy when a third party (you) can just find and fix the problem in a day, not even having created the original. For five, yes, count them, five other hardware devices in or attached to my computer (three of which are extremely well-known products, the other two, moderately so), I'm having to use beta, or beta-quality drivers, all of which have major features missing compared to the XP drivers. I figured after 2.5 months of release, the state of Vista would be better. If it wasn't for this wireless modem fix, I probably would have had no choice but to go back to XP. Vista, the OS itself, is fine, but the state of drivers is abysmal. I didn't expect that before upgrading and was sort of shocked, actually.

The problem was not Microsofts, the KB article had been out for almost 2.5 years as of writing this and a full 2 years before Vista was released. It was just that VZW and Sprint are too lazy to write the drivers to support. The device makers forgot to put "include=mdmcpq.inf" in place which tells the driver where to look for the usbser.sys driver. In Windows Vista especially the x64 this is important since many legacy drivers have been moved, and replaced with 64-bit compatible drivers.
One of the main rules of programming is don't assume anything and follow the documentation provided by the system maker. VZW, Sprint, or who ever did not do that they assumed the usbser.sys driver would always stay in the system32 folder instead of being packed away until it was needed. Don't blame Microsoft for trying to clean up some legacy support, because these companies had a full 2 years lead time to make changes to 3 lines of the driver inf file. They didn't do that and they will soon either fall on their face with tech support calls or be forced to use my driver or do the 10 mins of research them selves.
Blame HTC - the carriers don't write the drivers, the OEMs do.

My personal phone is a sprint PDA, but I work for a large corporation that uses Verizon as an advanced support tech dealing primarily with cellular tech. So I deal alot with verizon, both officially and unofficially (people asking about their personal phones)
