I found a killer deal on a 4GB card but wanna know 1st if the SDA supports it. From what I've collected, it seems to mostly matter what file system the device supports, as fat16 has 2GB limit. s
I think the SDA (and I would hope WM5 devices) support FAT32. I recently noticed that my 512 miniSD card was formated in FAT16 and decided to bring it in to the 21th century and reformat it in FAT32. At this moment it is running FAT32 and doesn't have a problem.
Now, this doesn't necessarily mean that the 4GB card will work, but if it doesn't I don't think it's because of a FAT limitation.

Perhaps WM 5 can work with FAT32 but has a problem with the total size of the card.
You have introduced an interesting aspect (in an aside from the 4GB+ query) in that you formatted to FAT32 when typically the cards come and run FAT(16) and you state that your card runs fine.
I had disastrous results when formatting my 2GB card and lost half its capacity for some reason. This occurrence is not new as I found three different programs addressing the 2GB card problem (maybe it’s the size?).
If you are brave enough, get a 2GB/4GB card, format it to FAT32 and let us know what happens. Anyone else out there ever try this?
I own a Verizon xv6700 and just recently purchased a 4GB mini sd card on ebay from user id grassroots-computers and it works great. I just popped it into my PC to format it FAT32 and put it into my phone and voila!

This is good news but I would like to know/confirm a few things, please.
Are you running a Win XP machine to format the card?
Any special software to format with or do you right-click on the drive and choose to format to FAT32?
Do you have more than 2GB of info loaded on the card at this time?
I had a nice 2GB card that I tried to format (FAT16, never tried FAT32) this way and ended up halving its capacity so I’m interested in avoiding this problem in the future.
Thanks for any details including the card make.
Additionally, have you (anyone else for that matter) used any of the “fast” cards or are the just for the newer digital cameras (not available in miniSD)?

I just took a glance at Grassroots website and found that they list a 4GB Samsung miniSD. Take a look .
They pulled their 4GB cards from eBay because of the new frenzy.
The 4GB sells for $20 more than two 2GB; I'll wait.
Yes I am running a Win XP machine to format the card (well specifically Bootcamp with my MacBook Pro but it is Win XP).
No I am not using any special software to format the card. I just right-clicked on the drive, chose format, selected FAT32 and renamed the card 4GB. That was it.
Here is another screen shot showing more than 2GB on the card. I loaded more onto it today.
It states on their website that it is a "bare Samsung OEM card". I won one of their eBay auctions for $73.45 including shipping however it doesn't look like their currently selling any on eBay probably because they can get more money by selling them directly through their site.
This is interesting. Do you think that, outside of formatting the card to FAT32, only PPCs can handle the 4GB cards and not Smart(Dumb?)phones like my SDA?
Is it the software, the board, chipset(s)?
Your processor clocks at 416MHz typically, I have mine overclocked at just 240MHz - Could this be the culprit, if at all, as well?
It would be nice to be able to walk in off the street to a retailer, have them give you a 4Gb card to demo on site to see if it worked.
I'm tired of paying for shipping on an item that won't work on/in my phone; where's the support from T-Mobile, HTC, CNet, Phonescoop, etc on these issues?
Hi, Forget about the SDHC format. I think plain SD formats are also available. My issue is if the SDA supports 4GB plain SD.
I just heard from tmobile customer support that there is no upper limit to the size of the SD card that can be used.
I also got confirmation from ebay sellers that this is the older format and not SDHC.
The issue is that of the CPU now. I am wondering if any ebay sellers offer trial with possible return to facilitate this type of testing. Will keep you guys posted if I end up getting one.
So did you buy an eBay one yet? It'd be nice to know what exact memory brand it was (and perhaps the seller) so we can be certain which 4GB to purchase. I was just thinking of buying a 2GB MiniSD that I found online for $18.50 (no rebate) but 4GB just sounds so niiiice.

Here is an interesting problem - none (that I know of) of the manufacturers of storage cards test or publish tests of compatible phones/devices. I have also found little help within their online sites.
It would cost them very little to have members of HoFo, for example, test their cards to help provide a comfort level among end-users.

What is the price for 4GB cards now? When I last looked they were a hell-of-a-lot more expensive than two 2GB cards so, given that there is the likely hood that the larger card may not even work in your device, why risk your money plus the extra bucks (over 2 x 2GB) just to say that you have a 4GB card?! Then there are "High Speed" cards available which are even more expensive and really for cameras. Maybe it's the size difference but you wonder why a digital camera can easily handle the larger cards but a WM5 phone may not.
If you haven't seen this yet; take a look.
I'm going to stick with 2GB cards for the meantime.

Personally, I do not think the prevailing vendors will ever make a mini SD over 2G. Focus is now on SDHC. I just hope the phone manufacturers follow suit and support SDHC.
Thanks for the link and info phonuzer; very informative infon on how to get it working. I'm wondering though... the author mentioned Transcend and only transcend I see in 4GB capacity is SDHC. I wonder if he got a SDHC working. It seems plausible since it's reported that many SDHC haven't conformed to standardization yet. Also regarding the multiple partition fix; it would seem that filling up more than 2GB would also work. I plan to keep 3GB of music on the card if it works so that shouldn't be an issue (I hope).
Well, I'm very interested in using these 4GB cards in my phone. Two 2GB cards would suck because I have a boxwave cover on my phone plus the SD is located underneath the battery. Plus I already have 1GB so 2GB doesn't really seem worth the upgrade, especially when there are reports of 4GB working.
I've been watching other auctions similar so to the one listed; I think some even claim Samsung memory but at more reasonable rates (around $36) bu I'm really curious why these non-SDHC ones are ONLY on eBay. Certainly companies see a market for people with older devices that don't support SDHC don't they? So what could be their reasoning, if any?
I asked one power seller (50000+ feedback) on eBay to shed some light as they obviously deal with a lot of people that would probably in a similar scenario, and their response was only to ask the question again, but to 'uncheck hide email address'. How flaky I thought. They take the time to respond w/ some invasive rhetoric but can't answer a question.
If in the meantime you end up trying Timberline or another generic, let me know
I think I'll drop the cash, but perhaps after a couple more emails to hopefully more informative sellers. I think most of these generic 4GB cards are samsung memory so if timberline works so should the next.
