How to install Custom Ringers on the U740

I have found a pretty simple way. I am planning on writing a small program to make the process easier in a little bit. This phone like several others creates an index of the files on the phone. All you need to do is edit the index with where your file is.

Ringtones are kept in:
/ff/brew/mod/mr

The index file is named MrInfo.db and the ringtones are stored in this format:
ff/brew/mod/mr/a couple grand.mp3|0|3./ff/brew/mod/mr/a couple grand_02.mp3|0|3.

To add more to the index just continue just as the format is above. This will also work with ringtones on your mmc. A dummy file will most likely be needed in the /ff/brew/mod/mr folder so that when the phone resets the ringer index isn't deleted.

Does this mean we will be able to put ringtones on our memory cards??

I know there is a trick for putting ringtones on a memory card of most of the LG phones. It uses bitpim to update the database, but all files are put on the memory card in a directory called ringers. If we can get something like this working with the u740 that would be pretty sweet.

Yes, the phone doesn't even require dummy files, it is very easy to add ringtones from the memory stick here is another example of a index file with one ringer from the phone and one from the memory stick.

/ff/brew/mod/mr/back like that.mp3|0|3.mmc1/ringers/beep.mp3|0|3.

beep.mp3 is on the memory stick and
back like that.mp3 is on the phone.

You can just have a folder on your memory stick filled with files, all you need to do is make your index file.

I will work on making a simple program to automate the task.

Hmm...I don't have an /ff/brew/mod/mr. I have a /brew/mod/mr, which is currently empty. I've also got a /brew/10889/ringtones, which appears write-protected.

That is how the phone writes the directory to the index.

/brew/mod/mr

That is the actual directory you place files in.

'k, so where does the index go? The root?

EDIT: Got it. It goes in the /brew/mod/mr.
EDIT 2: Very cool and easy. I'm going to link to this thread from the main U740 thread as well.

Here's a quick tutorial:

With a data cable and BitPim, use the filesystem mode, and drop your ringers into /brew/mod/mr. Once they're all there, create a file on your computer using Notepad called "MrInfo.db" (put the quotes in when you're creating the file so that it doesn't have .txt on the end). In that file, for each file you put in /brew/mod/mr, create an entry which looks like this:
/ff/brew/mod/mr/file1.mp3|0|3./ff/brew/mod/mr/file2.mid|0|3.
and so on, ending even the final entry with a period. Note that while the file is in /brew/mod/mr on the phone, the MrInfo.db considers the file to be in /ff/brew/mod/mr. (Stupid, yes, but it seems to work...) Finally, copy MrInfo.db to the phone. Disconnect the phone and restart it.

rather than adding the files and creating the MrInfo.db from scratch... try this...

Use BitPim to add all your files into /brew/mod/mr then power the phone off/on.

Use the "email trick" -> http://mark.cdmaforums.com/HowToEmail.htm and email and save 1 ring tone to your phone's memory...

the phone will make the /brew/mod/mr/MrInfo.db containing ALL files in the /brew/mod/mr folder... Use Bitpim to copy it to your pc...

I suggest using a HEX editor because there are a few "special characters" bween the ring tone entires...

But you can open it with Notepad...

Change the |0|0 after each tone to |0|3..
Example: change... /ff/brew/mod/mr/iPhone.mp3|0|0
/ff/brew/mod/mr/Sk8er_Boi-Mid.mid|0|0
/ff/brew/mod/mr/001_CTU24.mp3|0|0

/ff/brew/mod/mr/iPhone.mp3|0|3
/ff/brew/mod/mr/Sk8er_Boi-Mid.mid|0|3
/ff/brew/mod/mr/001_CTU24.mp3|0|3

then overwrite the copy on the phone's file system with the edited copy.. and restart the phone...

Perhaps, but a file without them works fine...
Code:
7C 30 7C 33 2E 2F 66 66 | 0 | 3 . / f f

Perhaps the special characters are CRLFs, i.e. ignored whitespace?

Mark_Venture has it down, but you don't even have to do the "email trick" thing.
1. Put the ringtones you want into /brew/mod/mr
2. Reboot the phone from within BitPim (It will create the MrInfo.db but all the entries will have the 0|0 at the end)
3. Save the MrInfo.db file to your computer, then modify it so the 0|0 is changed to 0|3 for each entry (I also recommend using a hex editor rather than notepad)
4. Overwrite the MrInfo.db file on the phone with the one you just modified.
5. Reboot the phone again
You now have ringtones!

how do you do that?? I don't see that option... I have BitPim 9.08, with it configured as CDMA Other.. Oh, and normal power off/on didn't seem to cause this file to be recreated..

And Ok, maybe for another thread.. but can we do the same with pix? When I drop them in /brew/mod/10888 folder, I can't get the Default Album.alb to get re-created listing these newly added pix.

Go to /brew/mod/mr then with the cursor in the right side window in BitPim, right click - you should see:
New file...
