How to use your Alltel'd Razr V3m as a USB Hard drive
Hello All,
Just figured this out so I thought I'd share.
Sick of using MPT to transfer music/ringtones/etc.?
You can use your Alltel firmwared V3m as a USB hard drive with just a few simple steps. Here's how-
1. download these modified menus from http://rapidshare.com/files/1835333...USB-hd.zip.html
2. unzip and using either p2kcommander or efs explorer put mma_ucp and mma_dcp in /a/motorola/system
3. Edit seem 2742 (size 00, record 1) offset 009b. check bit 5
4. Reboot your phone.
You should now have a new icon called USB Settings under Settings->Connection
Change this from modem/com to USB drive to transfer files to/from your MMC on the phone...
Note- this has only been tried on the V3m with Alltel firmware!!! You're welcome to experiment and post results with other devices (V3c?) or firmwares (Verizon?) But backup your original menu files first!!! If in doubt, only copy the mma_ucp file to your phone. That way a master reset will restore your menu. Good Luck!

Not sure if further confirmation is needed, but this does work. My work comp doesnt have bluetooth, but now it isnt needed.
If this was on there before hand, how come nobody said anything? It is quite valuable in my opinion. If one doesnt have MPT, and doesnt have bluetooth, they can still add files to the card, which in turn can be transferred over to the phone. No need for p2kcommander or bitpim either for transfferring pics/ringtones. No need to take the card out and pop it in a card reader each time they want to add music or ringtones. Not necesary to delete the mytonedb.db anymore. I know many people who will be happy to hear about this who have the alltel flash.
Hello,
Neo- It probably would work on a verizon V3m. But the menu won't have any of the verizon specific stuff. So other things will be broken. One can do the seem edit, then edit the mma_ucp directly. (Not easy.)
If someone wants to upload the stock Verizon mmu files I'll give it a go.
(Was trying to write how to in this post but it got too convoluted and confusing to read! Perhaps I'll start it as a thread...)
Some notes-
1. The mmu files posted above are from Mark Venture's excellent Monster2 tutorial (V3m system files). They have merely been altered to add the 'USB Settings' and 'Sync' options.
2. There are Seem edits somewhere in seem 2742 to enable 'Sync' in the connections menu, and to enable 'Plays for sure Player' (or somesuch thing) in the USB settings menu. I just haven't nailed them down yet. It took three hours of bit flipping and phone booting to find the one I posted above. (Nice to have found my own SEEM Pulled some hair out though.)
I'm not sure that plays for sure will work anyway. And 'Sync' is not a media player 'sync'. it looks more like an offline web page sync...

No...it's definitely not stock Alltel, and it's also not stock MetroPCS. Unless I completely missed something but I've never seen it on the Alltel firmware.
Just as a question, how are you isolating bits? I pulled out the bit to toggle the menu setting for Contrast and it only took me about 45 minutes. I compared two 2742 seems, one with Contrast and one without, then wrote down a list of all the differences. From there, I enabled a row (0-f, 10-1f, etc) at a time. It goes pretty quickly that way.
Also, what did you edit on the mma_ucp files? I've already tweaked mine so if I use another tweaked set, I'll have to re-apply what I've already done on my existing menus.

jlbrightbill,
I was isolating bits the same way you did. I had a 2742 seem someone uploaded that had the USB settings and Sync items enabled and I compared the differences.
Unfortunately, the differences were MASSIVE. Almost every zero in the file was replaced by an 'f'. It also didn't help that the seem I was looking for was all the way down at 009b... Or that I had to reboot the phone after every try to see if it worked. (Would've went quicker if I started at the bottom!)
Once I got in the neighborhood, it only took a few minutes to nail down the exact bit.
I came across something very cool in adding music to the tf card. Instead of just throwing all the mp3's onto the card and having them all unorganized on in the audio folder, add the FOLDER with the music IN the folder to the card.
FOr instance, I loaded up Fallout Boy, Panic at the Disco, and Incubus folders into the audio folder. I then added music into their respective folders. When u go to the audio folder in the phone, it will show all the songs by alphabetical order. BUT, if u use the */# to scroll thru categories, it will actually scroll thru the folders and show just that artist. So the first screen u see all the songs listed under Sounds. Then hit the # and it will go to Unfiled (and probably wont show any songs). Then # again and it will go to the first FOLDER/ARTIST alphabetically. And so on, until you get back to the Sounds menu where it displays all the songs.
So in essence, u can create your playlist in the main menu and use shuffle to mix it up. Orr, if u want to listen to a particular artist, just scroll thru til u get to it. Im sure u could add allll of your music, and then go in and add them to user-created folders, but when loading music from scratch, u can already have it done. Most people say they dislike this audio player compared to the verizon one, but I think knowing how to set up categories will make it much better.
This is also nice for if u want to delete a certain artist from the phone, when u load up the shared/audio folder, since u originally added the folders, u can find it easier, rather than trying to locate the 10 files randomly placed in the folder.
Does this only show as a USB drive if you have a TF card inserted? I seem to have misplaced mine.
Yea, I took my card out. Made sure it was still on usb drive in connections. Plugged in phone, and it doesnt show mass storage device anymore...so yea, u need ur tf card in there.
What a great find! This is a feature I really missed after flashing my E816 and Amp'd V3m. Now if only someone would supply the Alltel k1m media player files that jlbrightbill requested. Perhaps then we could have a great phone and great mp3 player.

-Just in case anyone is wondering what I'm talking about.
jlbrightbill-
As for the mma files I'll probably start a second thread dealing just with that but here's a few hints-
1. Hex offset 002 is the number of menu items and must be incremented for each item added
2. Each menu Item is 36 bytes and ends with CD 18 03
3. the first half of the file is the menu, the second half is icon links. The menu items are solid text, in the icon items the text alternates 00's
4. There are 4 number bytes then a 00 byte then the title at the beginning of the menu item. The first is the parent menu, the second decides menu order and the third and fourth I don't know what they do but their values are FF 40
So to add the item you must insert 36 bytes directly after the last menu item's CD 18 03 bits but before the icon section, then insert your menu item into that 36 bytes. The first number must match the number of the parent menu(settings), the second decides the order in that menu, the third and fourth should not be changed. The last 3 bytes of the menu item should be CD 18 03
You must also increment the 0002 offset once for each item added.
Confusing as all getout, which is why I'm thinking that mma editing should have it's own thread...
But the USB setting hex string is-
00 00 00 XX XX FF 40 00 55 73 62 53 65 74 74 69 6e 67 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 CD 18 03
replacing the first XX with the hex number of the parent menu (26 on my mma_ucp), and the second XX will decide what order the item appears in on that submenu. (make sure it's different than other items on the same submenu or you'll have problems!
hope this helps,
kernelpanic <EDIT> This does not Apply to all phones! NeoFury just sent me his verizon mma_ucp and it's offset between menu items is 22 bytes not 36, and the numbers are different! The Above info ONLY applies to Alltel firmware for now. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! I will try to edit the Verizon mma_ucp to enable this, but if you're on Verizon the Sync option (MTP) should work just as well. <EDIT>
