Holly Crap!!!!! I Notice A Huge Increase In Egde Speeds!!!

I just noticed a huge (stable) increase in EDGE speeds on both my Imate SP5 and my IPAQ 6945. I even called my friend to confirm speed on his EDGE RAZR and he notice a big difference in speed too. So I'm not bugging out. I'm in Queens, he is in Manhattan.

Using IE and Opera browser is MUCH faster, and I'm using Google Maps Mobile on
Satellite Settings(Picture) with Ease, something I could not do on EDGE without waiting forever just yesterday. I had to double check and make sure I wasn't connected to my WiFi, that how much the increase feels.

I not saying it is faster than 3G or whatever. (I don't even know 3G speeds), but this is an huge improvement. And I think it's just in time for the Iphone.

Can other Cingular customers on EDGE confirm this too?

It's either I'm right or there is a glitch that caused a momentary speed increase. So far I notice the Increased for about an hour 1/2.

Perhaps at&t threw the switch on the rumored "Fine Edge" project?

Maybe you're seeing that $50,000,000 they invested into their data network handling capabilities specifically for the iPhone launch? You'd think it would have been a steady upgrade, but it actually makes more sense that they'd bring on extra routers / equipment and bandwidth based on a deadlike (ie. the phone's launch.) It's not like they needed it before.

This is a good sign.. then again, I can't even FATHOM the instant data load increase nation-wide on their network by this time tomorrow.

It's pretty much a first for any network, they slowly add customers like any other carrier.. at a pretty steady rate (maybe a few % points higher around the holidays) but this? Millions of phones? With many times more data-intensive capabilities than any other device on their network? Instantly? Woot.

I'd love to hear some more details on just exactly what it is that they did to their network for this, like technology wise (just out of curiosity.)

I think I just answered our questions about 3G though. There's no way in hell that a developing/ largely untested technology could INSTANTLY support millions of devices with the reputation of two huge companies on the line. It had to be GSM/EDGE initially (and this is also why they made it no secret that EVENTUALLY it'd be 3G.)

I'm getting 207kbps here tethered on a s710a. Used speakeasy to measure speeds. Thats noticeably faster than I recall seeing when I used to use that phone.

Well to be honest, I live in an edge area only (no umts) I have run the speed test 3 times and 2 different devices in different parts of town.

Samsung Blackjack (fresh restart using PIE) avg speed 196kbit/s

Motorola v3xx (restarted) avg speed 186kbit/s

Thats double speed from when I ran the test 2 weeks ago.

Very Good AT&T
