I have a ultra mobile PC with builtin gsm modem. I already have various cell plans, but now I want something that offers a prepaid data plan for a PC(not pda or phone). I have unlocked the modem so it will take any North American gsm SIM. Does anyone have any suggestions? I will also be intersted in a plan that doesnt offer unlimited data, but as long as it offers some decent usage. Thanks!

Don't forget Sidekick on T-Mobile. The handset is pricy, but it's $1/day for unlimited data, text, email, internet. Nevermind.... I just realized he wants to tether or something. Sidekick only works on Sidekick...

Cingular/at&t is your only choice if you want to use your GSM modem. The APN provisioned on the T-Mobile Sidekick plan flat out won't work with any device other than a Sidekick. Boost is iDEN, so that's out of the question if you want to use the GSM modem.
Just make sure your GSM modem supports the 800/850 MHz and 1900 MHz bands for optimum coverage on the Cingular/at&t network. Good luck!
T-mobile's Blackberry $30/mon data only plan (no contract required via flexpay) is no problem. Don't confuse it with the Sidekick plan which does suck.

Fixup: Is the Blackberry Plan on T-Mo an add-on plan? Do you have to have a separate voice plan with that, which would raise the cost beyond the $30 you mentioned?

Not Fixup, but I just read the Flex Pay thread in the T-Mobile forum and originally it was stated that BB standalone plans were not available on Flex Pay, yet I saw that at least two or more people posted that they were able to get the $29.99 BB standalone data plan. So I assume that the answer is no. You apparently do not have to have a voice plan in order to get a data plan.
I have not done it myself but that's what I have gathered: $30 unlimited data (tell them you have a blackberry), no voice or any other plans required. You cannot order this from the web, you have to go to a local store with your photo ID or call a toll free # (search "flexpay" on tmo website).
Voice call is $0.02/min (correction: $0.20/min). If you like to use prepay for voice, you can use a dual sim adapter. Some newer adapters can use two sim simultaneously, very cool.
Cellular One (Dobson) GSM has a prepaid SIM wher you can sign up for unlimited data for $1 a day, NO CONTRACT. It's a plan the sales rep told be about over the phone. Just go to a store and buy a $50 airtime credit, get the SIM and a free or discounted handset (if they still offer one); then you don't have to pay the $25 SIM only activation fee.
