Philadelphia Sprint CEO: We Don't See IDEN Network Going Away

May 13, 2008: 11:17 AM EST

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- The Nextel network isn't going away, says Sprint Nextel Corp. (S) Chief Executive Dan Hesse.

The network is one of few that run on a technology called iDEN, which is solely supported by Motorola Inc. (MOT). There have been reports that Sprint is considering the sale of the assets; Wall Street has called for the company to move subscribers away from the network and mothball the technology.

But Hesse, speaking to investors on Tuesday during the company's annual shareholder meeting, said he wants iDEN to be the primary choice for Nextel customers.

The company has invested heavily into making phones that can ride on both the iDEN network and the Sprint network, as well mimic iDEN phones' iconic walkie- talkie capabilities.

Motorola will continue to support the technology, Hesse said. There have been concerns the company may eventually cease supplying equipment, particularly as it works through its own problems and a pending split. Hesse said a certain volume has to be maintained for Motorola to make money on the business.

There is a certain risk that comes with a single-source vendor, Hesse said, adding that it is unlikely that other suppliers will enter the iDEN business.

“Right now, I’m glad we have the iDEN network,” Hesse said. “I wouldn’t have said that 18 months ago, but I am now ... from a financial perspective.”

Glad to hear that Hesse is putting a stop to all the spin-off rumors.

I knew it wasn't real, but glad he stomped out the fire while it was still small.

There's truth to that part. Where's the i876? Where's the i877? If they are rededicating themselves to iDEN, where are these units???

Nextel was a thriving culture within a company and Sprint SINGLE HANDILY DESTROYED IT. You try to pick up the pieces and move on, but sometimes it's just not quite that simple. When you watch something you LOVE so much die such a painful death, it makes moving on IMPOSSIBLE.

Screw the units, implement a TRUE SMS based Text Messaging system like SoLinc has!

BTW, Cot, I'm still waiting for you to send me those IMEI's.

Well, I spoke to someone in retentions today who informed me that there were several "new" NEXTEL handsets due out real soon. She actually told me that there was an IDEN Razr that will be out real soon.

Now, I questioned her about it being the 950v Q-Chat device and she said "nope" it's a Nextel. She told me that IDEN was not going anywhere.

I'm not convinced that there is an IDEN only Razr due out and think she meant the 950v.

In any event, I got the impression these new "nextel" handsets were being delivered to the stores as we were speaking.

I'm still thinking she meant the QChat phones but you never know.

^^^ That is correct. The ignorant will see QChat devices as Nextel devices and for most, they won't notice a difference.

And now according to Sprint technically they are Nextel phones as Nextel is now a product and not a network. I think they now want you to think Nextel = Direct Connect and Direct Connect is PTT which is iDen or QChat.

I think you will see the lines blurred by Sprint moving forward. IMO

Yeah, she maybe confused as everyone keeps saying the v950 is "Razr" like where as I don't see it from the pictures I saw. It's more w490 like (T-Mobile).

Motorola is supposed to release a iDEN phone that is "Razr" like Q1 of 09, but I doubt that is what she was talking about.

Only commited thing I have heard on the iDEN side is the BlackBerry with WiFi.

Releasing "1" phone in 3 Quarters is not "Recommiting" IMO.

What have we seen new this year? The i570? ooooooh!!!!

Not really. He is just stating the obvious and actually helping the spin off cause...

I mean, who would buy something that is dying? How much would that be worth?

The obvious is iDEN ain't going away, I could own Nextel (and it's exclusive rights to iDEN in the US) and still sell enough handsets to satisfy /\/\oto's requirements. Even if it's just to people who want to DC other countries where iDEN is growing like gangbusters.
