New E71 User - So far, no good

I've had the phone for a day and it's very frustrating setting it up. I can't find the simplest things, and I'm starting to fear they're simply not on the device. It didn't even come with a comprehensive user guide, and the one available online is in Spanish.

Is there a means to mass delete emails? How do you remove an email account altogether?

I have Missingsync for Mac and I see absolutely no means to load my own ringtones on to the phone. Am I missing something or is the E71?

No Yahoo messenger for Symbian?

As I said, very frustrating. I like the features on this phone, and I want it to work. I just have no idea how to navigate to the things I want.

I learned how to do most of these things by messing around with the settings, so dont be afraid to try things with your phone.

To delete several messages at once you have to go to your email list, push and hold the up arrow key (bottom left corner) and move the dpad up or down. You will see green check marks next to every message that you highlight. Once you have selected, or marked, all of the messages you can press the delete key. if you want to erase all messages you can press left softkey, mark, mark all, then press delete key.

To delete an entire account, open messaging app, press options, settings, email, highlight the account, press left softkey, delete option.

I dont use a mac so i am not familiar with the sync software, but you can surely put a ringtone on your memory card and then select that file as a ringtone. A card reader would work.

A lot of us are old e61 users and are familiar with s60v3. With that being said dont get too frustrated. once you learn s60 it will get eaiser. dont get too frustrated . post your questions here we will help you as much as we can.. if all else fails you can use your e71 in mass storage mode and install ringtones manually

To delete a bunch of emails, while in the inbox showing the headers, hold down the shift key and use the dpad to scroll up or down the list. A green check mark will appear next to each one. Then hit the delete key and you should see a choice to delete either from the phone or from the phone and server.

To get ringtones from my Mac onto my E71 I just send the file via bluetooth. It gets saved to "music" and is available as a ringtone. Right now I'm using Desire by U2, in MP3 format. I may switch to Fly Me To The Moon by Sinatra, or Gimme Shelter by the Stones.

I don't use any messenger programs so I can't help there. Symbian is different from most other operating systems, but once you get the hang of it you'll find it's very intuitive. Stable as hell too.

do "Send File..." off the Bluetooth menu on your Mac.

try not to get frustrated that fast with symbian, you have a little learning curve ahead of you. but it will only take 1 week or so.

well on my n95 there is a pencil key, so you hold it down and scroll up or down to select multiple messages. then press the C button to delete. or use the options key and SELECT ALL. i believe the e71 is similar with the menu and buttons.

to delete an email account you probably go into messaging app and into settings, then delete it from there.

all nokia s60 unlocked phones can set ANY mp3 as a ringtone, and even set different songs to different contacts. just connect your phone with the USB cable, open the mass storage device, and drag and drop the songs into a folder you created on the memory card. its the same to add your mp3 collection.

symbian is all about applications. so you have to install the app you want for instant messaging. SLICK is totally free and supports all clients, AIM, yahoo, google talk, etc. its also the best looking IM app.

s60 is stable and quick and infinitely customizable. a few tips, 1) hold the menu key to see running applications in the background. install handy taskman to greatly improve this, handy taskman is the first app i install on any s60 phone. 2) double tap the menu key on any app and it will minimize it to the background.

s60 phones can do pretty much anything, like a computer, you have to set it up and install things that you want to make it do what you want. just think of it like that and you'll be set.

for music dont mess around with syncing stuff. just connect the phone, even with bluetooth, and just drag and drop or copy and paste. i create a folder on the memory card called MP3s and paste all my collection in there. then i set certain mp3s as ringtones from that folder.

same method with videos and movies.

What I find so frustrating about the device is that I transferred a single song to the phone, it downloaded into "My Folders." except now I can't find "My Folders" to save my life.

When I got my E61i in early 2007, I had never touched S60 before. But trust me, it's like crack once you start to understand it. Think of S60 more like a full OS rather than a telephone OS. There are context menus and a definite theme to how everything will work.

Once you get the basics, you'll see that S60 is like crack and you'll never want to use anything else.

I have a Mac and I installed and am using Nokia Multimedia Transfer to sync my E71 with iTunes and iPhoto.

The program creates a E71 folder in both iTunes and iPhoto and then any playlist or photo set in the folder will sync with the phone via usb cable.

Find it Here

You can use Nokia's iPhoto/iTunes plugin to transfer media stuff to your phone...

So where do I find "slick" and "handy taskman?"

depends how you transferred it. if you did SEND TO BLUETOOTH device, i think the song comes in as a message in the inbox, which is not intuitive at first.

but i dont know where your song went but when this type of thing happens to me, i just use the file browser and search each folder. its probably on the phone memory rather than memory card. so when you open file browser you are seeing phone memory folders. press right (tab over) and it will show memory card folders. file browser is in MENU>TOOLS i believe.

really what i would do is transfer the song again, but manually drag and drop the song directly into the folder of your choice.
