N78-3 OTA firmware update released!! FINALLY!

I'm downloading v12 right now - stuck in an EDGE area so taking a while. It's a 2MB update.

Will post impressions in this thread. Others with the N78-3, the day has finally come!! Go get the update and post your thoughts here as well.

WOOOOT!!

So the download was smooth. It asked me if I wanted to install it and warned me about doing a backup before proceeding. Then it said the phone can't be used during the update so I was aware (even in emergency) then prompted to start the process and it would involve restarting the phone.

Hit the button and it restarted to a white screen with UPDATING box and a progress bar. Looks like it's taking its time but it's moving along.

This is definitely very impressive to be able to download Firmware OTA and update without losing any data (hopefully! ).

The bar is not moving fast enough!

Update completed! Very very impressed. Phone booted up normal and then shortly got a little dialog that said "Phone update complete". ALL my data/apps and settings are intact and it's like nothing ever happened.

GO NOKIA!! I hope updates continue to be released this way...it's magical!

So far haven't noticed any major changes but the real test is going to be over the next few days as I use it. I'll continue to post back in this thread with any changes.

yes this is the latest release 12.046 that is also out for the N78 EURO. I'm especially excited since there were supposed to be several stability improvements included - let's hope they weren't lying.

Changes I can confirm so far:

- Naviscroll sensitivity tweaked. I had it turned off. Turned it back on and it's actually usable now! It's not as sensitive so you don't have accidental movement when trying to press down. Loving having this back.

- Right softkey 1000x better with response. Now everytime I press the right softkey it registers correctly. With v10 firmware it would sometimes not register no matter what. Huge improvement there.

- Music player seems to keep proper track of podcasts for resume. i.e. You are listening to something, phone reboots/turns off etc. and you go back to it, it will resume where you left off. This didn't work well with v10. I listen to podcasts a lot so this is a great feature for me.

Some of the updates per the changelogs are specifically around Bluetooth functionality and other things I can't test now. I had the phone freeze up on v10 when using FM transmitter sometimes so want to test that too which I can't now.

FWIW, my phone rebooted a few minutes with v12 ago when in the Messaging app which is not a good sign but I'll chalk that up to a fluke

Also the Camera zoom not working is still there but workaround still works - which is to start Camera app as soon as phone boots...use the zoom (make sure it works which it always does for me) and then exit. It'll continue working from then on.

I was actually doing pretty well with v10 on my N78 prior to updating so hopefully v12 doesn't break anything that was working before!

So far the Naviscroll sensitivity and right softkey responsiveness are worth the update alone.

Will update this thread over the next few days after using more.

+ Now when listening to the music player or other audio on the phone via the headphones, I don't hear static or crackle when there's data transfer occurring (email checking, web browsing, etc.) This is also a nice improvement.

+ GPS lock when using Google Maps or Maps 2.0 wk26 is exceptionally fast. It was always fast for me but when I just tried it at lunch today it was almost instantaneous. Maps even started tracking my walking right away!

Yes, yes, yes! I'm glad that happened, I expected that to be a hardware issue but I'm so glad they fixed that.

The update for me was painless. My data is still here as are all my apps. I haven't played with the phone yet as I was stress testing my modded Mediasmart Server all morning, but so far it looks good!

dude that sucks, but there is a light sensor on the phone, whenever you're in a dim light situation it gets dimmer and vice versa. Did you change rooms maybe?

I think this was documented when the Euro folks got their update on the Nokia forums. The maximum brightness of the screen was reduced. It is fine for me so doesn't bother me. I have mine set to the middle with auto brightness. Full brightness isn't AS bright as it used to be but it's bright enough.

Sorry if you liked it brighter.
