The second one goes deeper. I don´t know exactly the difference, but the second also could be used when your device powers on but refuse to start (for instance because a faulty app)
i am not sure either. i have been using the 1st one to solve any issues i might have with my phones over the last year. it has worked well, but recently my e71 was not playing well with mailforexchange and nothing i did would fix it until i tried the second reset code.
You have to turn off the phone, then hold the 3buttons while powering on the phone. Once you feel the slight vibration you can let go of the power button but keep the other three pressed until the handshake screen comes up. This will delete all your info and reset the phone

Second one is deeper and it does work on the E71 as I have already done so.
The first option will erase any installed apps and reset all options to default.
The second will erase all apps and format your internal memory completely. It won't however, reset all your options back to default...that is for option 1.
The procedure that I do is.....#1 first...then #2 after restart...then #1 again just to make sure everything is clean. After the 3rd restart I start customizing everything and installing my apps.
Hi,
I found a e71 in the park, didnt know who to return it to. Sim card contacts are blank and phone is off. Since I am unable to find the owner I have decided to keep the phone and give it to my mum.
However the phone is locked on power up so I cannot use it until I have cleared the lock code. I have tried powering on while pressing call, * and 3 it does not work, it still brings me to the lock code screen.

They are both the same thing, a hard reset. The other code not listed in this thread is the soft reset.

the 2nd one posted by the OP or also called the 3-finger salute is supposed to be done only if your phone is having problem like not booting or is not properly starting up, and others call it "Reformating" as opposed to "Hard Reset" for the *#7370#
and there are also times when "Soft Reset" is all your device needs, which is *#7780#, this will not totally delete all your data and settings...
and sometimes, perhaps most of the time, even just a simple reboot (OFF and then ON) is really all what your S60 needs...
