Pay per use text/IM rate increase?

I received a free text today from AT&T stating that the pay per use text and IM will increase to $.20/each on 11/12/08. FWIW, I'm on the pay as you go plan with the M2M. I never thought I'd see the day that texting will cost almost as much as calling someone! If you send messages, a pack is the way to go, from what I can tell.

Whereas they ride in a signaling channel and dozens will fit in the bandwidth for one minute of voice, the only conclusion is SMS is a rip off. For years on the real AT&T, it cost a dime to send and incoming were free. This goes back to when a voice minute fetched 50 cents or more. I think it would be immensely profitable at a nickel to send and free to receive. Probably at a penny to send and free to receive it would be a cash cow. Can you imagine the thumbs going, like they do in 3rd world countries?

Penalize me this way for text and I get the message loud and clear. I have all SMS/MMS blocked. Use voice or data instead.

Its not three cents per message... its three units, so that means the dollar figure would vary depending on what kind of airtime card you add to your tracfone. Plus, the free incoming text messaging is no more, unless you have a specific older model of tracfone -- most of the new ones (i.e. the moto w370, w376, lg 600/300, etc) all charge the same units for both incoming and outgoing.

AT&T is sticking with the familiar US provider pattern of noticing that people like a feature then screwing them on the price of it as much as possible.

With Tracfone texting is .3 units per incoming text and outgoing text. erictheasian is right about only certain older models having free incoming text. bad timeing if your phone has free incoming texts, it could be a glitch. I've seen a few people post about receiving free incoming text on a model that wasn't supposed to have that feature. Consider yourself lucky because the C139 doesn't typically have free incoming text.

I have the 1000 texts for $10 a month plan which makes each txt about 1 cent. A great deal and the reason I switched to ATT in the first place.

You mean 0.3 units per text. And a few phones are free to receive SMS.

Heavy texters it is a decent deal. (If prepaid is your thing.)

Unless I'm mistaken and I don' think I am, the c139 doesn't normally come with free incoming text. If it said free incoming text on the package, I think what you purchased was a special deal.

well that's just what i said they have these prepackaged deals all the time . at least here in central jersey . sometimes they give you extra minutes something like 300 then the next month or two they will prepackage a year for free until your next service date . and then free incoming textmessages . you just have to be patiently to deal you want comes around .

I don't care if they will double the price for sending SMS, but I believe the receiving end should not be charged.

By the way, how can I block sending/receiving SMS?

Here is the section in the Terms and Conditions dealing with messages:

Quote:
Messaging, Downloads & MEdia Net: These features require a compatible phone. Text /Instant Messaging and MEdia Net are automatically included at no monthly charge. Just pay as you use. You may remove these services at any time by contacting customer service. There is a charge per message sent or received, whether read or unread, solicited or unsolicited. If you cancel the Text /Instant Messaging service, you will not be able to send and receive messages, but AT&T does not guarantee all incoming messages will be blocked. Data usage is billed in full-kilobyte increments, and actual transport usage is rounded up to the next full kilobyte at the end of each session. Your account balance must be at least $5 to use MEdia Net, Instant Messaging and Multimedia Messaging services or to download ringtones, games and graphics. Data usage applies when downloading ringtones, games and graphics and sending and receiving multimedia messages. In some cases our network will resend data packets to ensure complete delivery. You will be billed for these re-sent packets. Certain advanced features are not available. All screen images are simulated. See the MEdia brochure or att.com/mediaterm for details. Your use of text/instant messaging, multimedia messaging, MEdia Net, and downloads acknowledges your agreement to those terms.

I'm starting to realize all US providers screw customers. $1 a day plus the cost of call? WTF? Look at Europe where prepaid is the norm! That's like charging an activation fee to use there product! I'm making them money they should be paying me an activation fee!
