I just called to cancel my sidekick data only plan and talked to a great guy over at retentions and he was able to set me up with a G1 that is Data only! Im going to be paying only $5 more at $34.99 vs. what I pay now which is 29.99 so that's cool by me. To make things better I got the G1 for only 159.99 instead of 179.99 which he broke up into 4 payments. Of course I had to extend my contract 2 years but I didn't care. So if your looking to get a G1 with DATA ONLY and NO voice mins call up now!
Didn't know T-Mobile offered such a service, learn somethin new every day, heh. That is a pretty competitive rate, considering VZW wants 50 bucks for a data only/pay per minute plan.
Yea the only reason I wanted it is because I only pay $20 for Unlimited mins with nextel, because of discounts, and grandfathered plans etc. Im not giving that up and nextel data is way to slow

Good job, OP, for getting the G1 with a subsidy while doing data only service.

It's a bit difficult to get now. If you're a new subscriber, they'll pawn you onto a minimum $40/month data-only plan (and even then, you might not be able to buy a G1 without a hybrid voice/data plan).
The sidekick data-only plans' prices rose a couple months ago ($45 w/ 400 messages; $55 unlimited messages), so the OP's a customer before old pricing schemes were phased out.

1.Can you stream video with the G1? The guy in the store said you can only stream on Youtube (because Google owns that) and not on other websites? 2. Does G1 have video record and playback? 3. Is there a 5 GB max w overage charges on Data-only plan? 4. Does Data-only include text and email and IM and if not what are per use charges for that? 5. Does the G1 have a MP3 player? Thanks for help.
Can you get the G1 with data- only plan on a prepaid basis like T-Mobile's Sidekick $1 a day plan but you need to pay full price for the phone? Thanks.
I'm gonna assume that he has another device for that.
Yep, I'm in the same boat - I've got an AT&T device that I use for voice. But the last time I called about this, the lady I spoke with (claims that she) tried to add data only and the system wouldn't allow her to confirm the account change. Hmm...
I wanted to use my G1 as an iPod Touch-like device with wireless data for streaming audio and video. I'm glad to see that this is finally possible.

I'm curious how much use you can get out of a single charge with only data use. Do you use your phone mostly on 3G or WiFi, and could you tell me how many hours of use and standby you get out of it?
I'm especially interested in whether the phone lasts longer without voice calls, because I have a voice phone that works fine, and I'd love a networked device that can last more than a day with moderate data use.
