LG Xenon (GR500) HOWTO: Load Java apps via memory card

I figured out how to load applications via memory card!
I'm on AT&T. Rogers may or may not allow you to load applications this way.

Note: "Context menu button" = the rectangle with horizontal lines through it, that appears on the upper-right hand corner of some screens.

Note2: .jad files with a MIDlet-Install-Notify line may use Internet. If you have pay-per-use data, you may want to try removing the MIDlet-Install-Notify line to avoid data usage - or just install the .jar and not the .jad

1. Obtain the .jar file (and .jad file, if possible) for the application you want to load.

2. Open the .jad file (if you have one) and check the MIDlet-Jar-URL line. It should NOT have a http://web.site.address/folder/folder2/etc at the beginning. If it does, remove everything except the .jar file name.
For example (this is for Google Maps), change
MIDlet-Jar-URL: http://m.google.com/maps/download/b...3.2/maps_m2.jar
to
MIDlet-Jar-URL: maps_m2.jar

2. Copy the .jar (and .jad if you have it) file to the memory card via your PC (use a MicroSD card reader, or if you have a USB cable, connect the phone to the PC in Mass Storage mode).

3. From the Home screen, tap the Application button (box with 4 dots).

4. Tap the Folder tab.

5. Tap More.

6. Tap Other Files.
A list of files will appear here. This seems to be a list of all the files the phone doesn't "know" about.
NOTE: You will likely see .jad and .jar files here with numbered names, like 020.jad and 020.jar, etc. DO NOT DELETE these! These are the applications that you have copied to your memory card. If you delete these, the associated application won't work anymore and you will need to reload it.

7. Tap the .jad or .jar file you want to install. Once you go through the confirmation screens, it will be installed TO YOUR PHONE.

8. If you want, go to Games or Applications and tap the Context menu button and tap Copy to or Move to if you want to move or copy the application to the memory card. Yes, I KNOW it is ALREADY on the memory card, but if you don't do it this way, it's not somewhere the phone knows how to access it.

9. To clean up the files you used to install the app, go back to Other Files, then tap the Context menu button, tap Delete, then choose the file(s) to delete.

Hope that helps folks!

Thanks for the well-written how-to -- haven't got my Xenon yet, but will be useful information when I do

Sorry, not much going on in that realm yet because the phone's filesystem remains untouchable...

Hopefully a2uploader or another util will grant access to db3200 cid 54 phones like the Xenon soon. There are definitely a few things I'd like to tweak.

Java app Address Book?

Would this work to replace or offer an alternative address book? I'm seriously considering the Xenon but the address book lacks a physical or street address field.

You can fake it with memo but then there's no room for a real memo.

I suppose you could load your own address book app, but I'm not sure you'd be able to use it to dial or synchronize with the phone's native address book. It would depend on the permissions the application is allowed, which depends on the signing.

You'd be better served by a hack, but so far there is no method to add/replace files on the phone's filesystem, so no hacking...

Having two address books might work. I could use the built in one for calling and then another one to keep street addresses. It would be a pain to keep the two apps synced but as long as I had somewhere to store addresses it would be OK. They don't change often.

Does anyone know where I could get an app like that? I've done some searching but not really found anything. I wouldn't mind paying a couple of bucks.

The alternative is something like the Samsung Propel which I don't like nearly as much.

Try GetJar, seems to be some options there.

I was able to send the file to the phone via bluetooth. I connected to my phone using the default windows utility, right clicked on my bluetooth tray icon and then send file. The file appeared in my other files app, but i'm on rogers so it deosn't install.

Unfortunately it seems the Rogers firmware only allows Java app loading OTA.

What does this mean exactly ? Does it mean that if I download apps directly from the phone browser, they're supposed to work ?

Yes, though what the app has access to will depend on the security signature.
