Question Tethering Droid to Laptop

I travel a lot and do not always have a wifi spot, so I currently tether my BB to my laptop and use mobil broadband. Have searche treads and seem to be reading mixed info. Can the new moto droid be tethered? If so, what is required. Want droid over storm2, but this is a must for me.

There is a $30 / month tethering charge above and beyond the required $30 / month smartphone data plan. Verizon will provide you what you need if you order this.

According to this forum, http://www.droidforums.net/forum/dr...-tethering.html, the answer is no. If true it would be a bummer since I would like to replace my broadband card with the Droid.

But I'll wait for its release and see if indeed tethering capability is no go.

That thread did not say that the droid cannot be used for tethering at all. It absolutely can but is it USB tethering.

You wont find in on the android market (you will need to enable non market apps on your phone to install) but there is also PDAnet. Been around for years and they have an android client. It lets you teather over your phones data (no extra carry charges.. though be warned if you over use it they can catch on and will terminate your service so use wisely) I have used there BB client in the past and will be using there android client as soon as I get my droid next week

You mean I do not have to pay the $15 tethering charge? How much time is too much?

Correct.. no $15 dollar charge.. only cost is what you pay for the app (about 30 bucks without looking). I can't tell you what the limit is.. I've never hit it. But I'ved used it mainly for work (I support webordering and SAP for a large comapny) and have never had issues. I would say as long as your just checking email surfing the web (if you cant do it from the phone) or having to vpn in to work for something you should be fine. I however would not try playing online games, downloading or streaming music or video or downloading any very large files

Oh man I hope this isn't so! I'm a storm chaser and rely on tethering my phone to my laptop big time. I currently use the Storm to do so and just figured this option on the Droid would be an obvious, no brainer add on. Especially with all the complaints about ATT not allowing iPhone to tether. I'm sure there would be work arounds to do this but I stream live video, and am accessing radar all day when I'm out there, so they'd be on to me pretty quickly if I weren't paying extra for the option. Uggh, I hate to say it but it looks like I'm going to be stuck with the Storm until this issue is addressed or becomes clearer. Super, super disappointing and unfortunately a deal breaker to me if tethering is not allowed...Bummer

UPDATE - Just talked to a VZ rep for about 20 minutes while she dug around looking for info on this and she couldn't tell me yes or no. The specs she had didn't list anything about it. I got the "call us once it's released and then we should know more" spiel. Not sounding very encouraging...

You CAN tether with the Droid. You just have to pay the fee. It is not a WiFi tether it is a USB one (you have to connect the PC and the Droid over USB).

You could use PDAnet but YMMV.

Where did you get the idea that you could not?

What fee? Is it like the $15 add on that I use with my BB Storm? Also, I've not used PDAnet but wouldn't Verizon monitor this if you were pulling down serious amounts of data as I do? Just seems to me they would shut you down if you were using 5 gigs a month virtually for free? If I can tether without having to be sneaky, I could care less if its wireless or if I have to plug in the phone via USB. I would love this phone to have tethering capability but I have not seen any official source to say that it is. Please point me to your source as I could be blind.

Wirelessly posted (RIM Storm 9530: BlackBerry9530/5.0.0.328 Profile/MIDP-2.1 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/105)

Official tethering means Smith Micro whipping up a VZ Access Manager build that can communicate with the Droid. No telling how long it will take.

It's almost a given you'll be able to tether with it. It is jus ta matter of what you want to pay for to do so. Most people don't want to pay the $60/mon to do it which is why they'll use PDAnet to get around it. However in using PDAnet tho you have to be careful not to use it to much as stated. If you folks already pay the fee on your current devices then I'm sure it will not be a big deal. Heck if you are paying the $60/month currently to do it then I wouldn't even be concerned about using PDAnet seeing as you are in fact paying for the services so VZW has nothing to get on your case about in all honesty.
