Okay, so while I was miffed at Samsung for making things a little trickier than they should be, I knew there would be a way around it. You can not set your standard MP3 files as ringtones, you can only use DRM-MP3 files as ringtones.
The work around is a program that was mentioned on here, called Media Audio Cutter from ringtonecity.com. When you go to check out, things look kind of sketchy, but I paid my $15 yesterday and got my registration code today and the software works.
Apparently the T809 will only support ringtones less than 35 seconds (roughly, still testing). I used the Samsung software to cut and trim the MP3, add some fades and saved it as an MP3 file. I used Media Audio Cutter to open that MP3 up and "Upload with DRM". It uploads it to a (theirs?) web site and gives you a URL to enter into your phone. When you do, it retrieves the ringtone from the server and saves it to the phone.
I'm listening to my first one now. "We Need a War" by Fischerspooner. Woo hoo!
A side note about the software -- where as some other ringtone software ties your phone number to the software when you register it, Media Audio Cutter simply uploads and gives you the URL, so in effect, you can use it to put ringtones on multiple numbers. Nice touch.
My friend was telling me maybe you can rename the ringtone from .mp3 to .mid and maybe that will work. I dunno maybe you guys can play around with that.
i tried the .3gp thing...just rename all mp3's to .3gp and transfer them via bluetooth to the phone or card...it will show up in the music folder and you CAN FINALLY USE THEM AS RINGTONES!!!!!!!!! YAY
After two days of playing around with the t809 and tring to get the mp3 ringtones to work i have found this out.
1. remane you mp3 from .mp3 to .3gp (the video format the 809 supports)
2. copy it to your t-flash card
3. find the file and set as RINGER.
have fun every one.
The work around has been found and yes it works.

Now you know how I think.
I use xingtone to create ringtones for my phone, they transfer to the samsung t809 in the mp3 player but im confused as to how to rename them to make them work as ringtone? saved them to transflash and converted file to mpeg4 but that didnt work can someone give me step by step instructions on how to convert a mp3 file received to the phone to make it work on the samsung t809 as a ringtone. love the xingtone software but kinda new to converting files etc etc thanx sadlatin2@aol.com
Once you make your Mp3 clip, you need to right click on the filename in Windows Explorer and Rename the extension from .mp3 to .3gp and save it. Then send it to your phone or put it on the TransFlash card and put that in your phone.
Now if you cannot see the filename extensions (i.e. all you see is my_song and not my_song.mp3, you need to go to View at the top of the Explorer Toolbar and select Options and uncheck Hide file extensions for known filetypes and then Okay. Now you should be able to see the .mp3 at the end of the filenames.
this is an awsome phone so im wondering if i have to do the same thing to make videos work on the phone as well from a transflash card(convert to .3gp?) and where can i get a 512 meg transflash for the best price?? any info holla back
i was reading that ring tones have a max of 35 sec. does that mean mp3's that i set as ring tones also can only be 35 sec? or does it only play 35 sec of mp3..
