re: 8125 basic questions
Just got my 8125- looking at it to replace our Blackberries in our office for a number of different reasons, but:
1. On Phone Contacts- how do I do a "pause" or "wait"? Can't see to find this anywhere in the forums. Most phone use a "p" for a timed pause and a "w" for a manual pause. A typical application for us is for logging into our own company voice mail. We'd have a phone number stored in contacts as: "310-555-1212W*1234" Where the "*" is the login key and the "1234" would be the password.
I noticed when I brought my SIM chip over into my 8125 from my RAZR, all of the phone numbers in Contacts that had this format suddenly lost the "wait" character and ended up looking like this: 310-555-12121234. I tried to create a new contact using the "w" and "p" keys and got an error "Can't store to SIM." (It's a 64K Orange SIM). I also tried this forcing it not to write to the SIM for the new contact but got same result.
2. Screen orientation: I did Start-Settings-System-Screen and selected "Landscape(left handed)". This works best for me. The screen then changes to Landscape. I then slid open the keyboard and after I closed it, the screen went back to Portrait! Now the only time the screen goes into Landscape is when I slide the keyboard open- when I close it, back to Portrait it goes and stays that way unless I manually set it back to Landscape. Going back into the Settings, in either case with the Keyboad open or closed, Screen Settings show either Landscape (fomer) or Portrait (latter) This is very irritating. I want it to say in Landscape all the time. Shouldn't it stay in Landscape like I set it?
3. "Running Programs"- This is analogous, I guess, to the Task Manager in "land line" Windows :-). So there's a list of "running programs", but some of them I used only for a moment. Do they stay loaded into W5 memory forever? Since I don't ever turn the device off, does that mean I have to manually "unload" some of them to prevent the Program Memory from being filled up? Any better way to manage that?
4. File management: Is there anything equivalent to the Explorer on WM5 for managing files. You can hit "all folders" in Word and you sort of get something similar but not really a good folder manager and explorer. Also what is the file "canned text"? When I open it, I just see a bunch of boxes and random letters.
5. ESC key: there's no "Esc" key to get out of what you're doing other than the "x" in the upper left, is there?

WOW! Thank you for all the information. I am due to receive my 8125 today and I am sooo excited. My boyfriend wanted this phone so bad, and I never understood the reason. Funny thing, i am actually getting one before him.
If anyone has any tips for me, or any cool dowloads let me know.

Thank you so much. This will be fun to go through. While I am technically literate I am brand new to smartphones and had some very basic questions I feel stupid for asking.
I was working my way down your list and got a bit confused about versions of software to download.
For instance, with Mort Saver their is are four versions:
- Desktop installation for MortSaver 2.0.
- PPC installation (CAB file) for MortSaver 2.0
- Desktop installation for MortSaver for Phone Edition 2.0.
- PPC installation (CAB file) for MortSaver for Phone Edition 2.0.
Which one should I download for the Cingular 8125?
Then the next download was for Total Commander. They have three versions:
- Total Commander for Pocket PC
- Total Commander for Windows Smartphone
- Total Commander for other devices
I assume that I need the Windows Smartphone version since this is a Windows Mobile 5.0 device. However, their description says that the Windows Smartphone version is for phones without a touchscreen while the Pocket PC version is for devices with a touchscreen.
Like I said, I feel dumb asking. Is it safe to say that all PPC stuff is off limits and I should always stick with Smartphone software?
Thanks in advance.
