MDA FAQ (Version 3.0)

MDA FAQ v3.0

Please PM me questions/answer as well or add them to this posting. I want this to be accurate and yes, some of this is overt plaigerism from forum postings.

Or you can make the following registry changes:

1) Locate the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\TNETWLN1\PARMS

2) Add a DWord value to it:

name: dot11SupportedRateMaskG

value: 8

I originally got the Anti Glare for my Pocket PC Phone Edition back when that came out. In all the time I used the phone I never had to change the Write Shield. This time around i got the combo pack because i wanted to see how I liked the Crystal Clear version that doesn't obscure the really nice display. Basically it's down to preferences. I like the Crystal Clear because you keep the look of the display (you can't really even see it's on there), but find it a little too smooth when using the stylus. The Anti Glare obviously reduces the glare at the cost of some of that nice screen, but also adds more texture that in my opinion makes the feel of the stylus better.

8. Will my $5/$6 tzones allow me to use pIE?

The proxy settings above might work for you but there is a rumor t-mobile is now shutting this down market by market. YMMV.

9. How many data plan options does tmobile offer?

There have been many, here is a partial list:

- $2.99 tzones unlimited (no longer offered)

- $4.99 tzones unlimited (no longer offered)

- $5.99 tzones unlimited

- $19.99 T-Mobile Internet (no longer offered?)

- $29.99 T-Mobile Total Internet w/ Hotspots

- $39.99 T-Mobile Total Internet w/ VPN

- $49.99 T-Mobile Total Internet stamdalone (no voiceplan)

10. What are some basic apps I need to get my phone setup?

Agile - AIM/ICQ/MSN/Yahoo client (download the one for PPC 2002

Magic Button - Shows open apps

PHM RegEdit - Registry editor

Registry Wizard - Automatic registry tweaks: NOTE: Registry Wizard 1i has issues and that people should stick to 1h.

.NET VNC Viewer - VNC Client

Total Commander - File manager / REG editor

Additional List of Smartphone apps: Machineman's Free Smartphone App Links

11. How do I edit the registry to get the [E] (EDGE) icon to display correctly, REMOVE HARMFUL EDGE DISCONNECTS, a [C] to indicate the caps loc key has been pressed or locked and[*] to indicate the Symbol key has been pressed or locked?

Quote:
For those of you with access to EDGE networks, it is nice to have an icon showing that you are connected to an EDGE network. That can be achieved with this tweak:

* Use Total Commander to navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\RIL\

* Create a new DWord EnableDifferGprsEdgeIcon and assign it a value of 1

* Perform a soft reset using method 2

Now you can use the "double END" trick to return to the home screen from almost anywhere without having the phone kill a data session (e.g. Agile, a web page download in progress, etc)

Note that there is a CAB at the end which you must load for it to work (that is, you must both that CAB AND the application)

Load both to the phone - not the storage card - to prevent problems. This is not an ActiveSync application - you have to put it on the phone (or storage card) and then execute the CAB from there using the file explorer - just point to the CAB file and click it to load.

Things to be aware of with unbranding and otherwise flashing firmware:

(1) You must CID-unlock the phone before you flash any other firmware on it (other than another T-Mobile load, of which there isn't one right now.) If you do not you will brick the phone and this is VERY hard to recover from! This is NOT the same thing as a SIM lock! It is intended to prevent what you're doing, by disallowing you from making a mistake by flashing firmware into the phone which it cannot run. Note that once you CID-unlock you can actually flash firmware for an entirely different device (!) onto the phone (e.g. the SDA firmware) which will absolutely not run at all and will result in your phone becoming a brick, so be very, very careful to make SURE you're flashing something the phone can actually "eat".

(2) If you flash firmware with a newer boot loader you may create a "one way" situation which cannot be reversed back to the T-Mobile firmware. Despite multiple requests nobody has confirmed that they can reflash back to the T-Mobile firmware from the "TEST" version whcih is out there. Note that the Test ROM is just that - its not intended for wide use and release.

(3) You can flash just the Radio ROM - and you might want to, as the T-Mobile version is quite old compared to some of the newer ones. There are mixed reviews on these so far, so I do not have a solid recommendation in this matter.

(4) Realize that flashing firmware (unlike customizing using the registry or loading something as a regular program) can and likely will invalidate the warranty, especially if you can't get back to the official T-Mobile load for some reason. Basically if a hard reset won't get you back to a stock T-Mobile device, you're taking this risk.

Wifi compatability - The Wizard works fine with open, both 64 and 128 bit WEP (using hexadecimal keys), and WPA-PSK using TKIP. It does not support WPA w/AES. If it will not talk to your access point suspect that the AP is set to "G" only mode (and your unit is not "G"" hacked) OR you have buggy firmware in your AP; see if you can find an update for it.

Boot loader access - To get to the boot loader with the phone OFF hold the CAMERA key and plug in the USB cable. You can also hold the camera key and press soft reset if the phone is running (the recessed button just below the IR port) with the stylus. Hold the CAMERA key until the loader screen appears (about 2-3 seconds)

13. Backing up the firmware to an SD Card (if you plan to fool around with new firmware!)

1. Get a 128MB SD card. They're cheap - under $20.

2. Insert said card.

3. Go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=37386 and download the aWizard utility. CID-unlock your phone. (You only need to do this ONCE, even if reflash in the future.)

4. Get a terminal program that can speak over the USB port. There is a patched version of Terraterm out there, along with a few others. You need a way to connect to the device over the USB port as an ascii terminal.

5. Turn off the phone.

6. Holding the CAMERA key, press the power button for 2-3 seconds. Continue holding the CAMERA key until it comes up in the tri-color screen.

7. Connect the USB cable. Wait until ActiveSync tries to start. CTRL-ALT-DEL Windows and kill the process wcescomm.exe (ActiveSync's communication driver)

8. Now start your terminal program and point it at the USB port. Hit RETURN and you should get a command prompt. You are now talking to the phone's boot loader in terminal mode.

9. Type "r2sd all" and hit RETURN.

10. If you get a security level violation, you DID NOT CID-unlock the device. Go back to step #1.

11. The ROM image (all of it) will be written to the SD card. Several messages will be displayed while this is in progress. Note that this is NOT - I repeat - NOT - a filesystem-formatted dump - it is a RAW image of the ROM with some checksum information included. Anything on the SD card will be destroyed - don't do this with a card that has data on it you care about!

12. You can stick this card somewhere to be used for restoring. If you want to save the image off the card to your computer, stick the SD card in your computer and then dump 128MB of the card starting at the front (the actual dump is about 80mb but will always be less than 128MB, so that's "safe".) You will need a tool like "psdread" or any other tool that can do byte-level I/O to the SD card in your PC's reader for this.

To restore a SD-card image dump to the Wizard:

1. Write the image to the SD card. Again, this is NOT a filesystem - its a RAW image! Unless you saved the image to the card from the Wizard initially you will need a tool that can do a raw write to the SD card in your computer.

2. With the Wizard OFF, insert the card into the SD slot.

3. Hold BOTH the CAMERA and VOICE keys and press the power button for 3 seconds. Release POWER.

4. Look CAREFULLY at the Wizard screen. The backlight WILL NOT BE ON! It will tell you to press the VOICE button if you wish to restore the SD card image. This message only appears for a few seconds and the backlight is OFF! If you wait too long you will end up at the tri-color bootloader screen. Press the VOICE button (if you still have it down, let up on it then press again.)

5. The restore will run. Note that the backlight IS NOT ON during this process! You may need a flashlight (or very bright ambient light) to be able to read the progress meter.

6. When the process is complete it will tell you to press "any key". Do so and you're back in the tri-color bootloader screen.

7. Turn off the Wizard with the power button. When you turn it back on, it will hard reset just as if it was brand new off the firmware you just restored.

Note that this is the ONLY way to recover from a bricked phone if you try to load the wrong firmware file using one of the "forcible" methods (e.g. aWizard) on a non-CID-unlocked phone, and have bypassed the normal protection methods as ActiveSync cannot get back in there under these circumstances.

I strongly recommend that if you're going to futz with firmware, that you get yourself a 128MB card, make one of these dumps, and TEST the restore before you play around. This will recover from almost any botch - the only exception is loading a firmware file via some means (e.g. "aWizard") that the phone cannot execute at all.

Note that I do not know if this will get around the "boot loader version is too high" problem - I'm not willing to try it until I have an official T-Mobile update with a newer boot loader.

This same method for both dump and restore works on the SDA as well.

13. Overclocking the MDA (do so at your own risk!)

Don't forget to remove the ";" (without the quotes) at the beginning of the overclock settings in the configuration file!

How fast you can clock it depends on your device, it's just a matter of trial and error. 240 seems to be safe for the majority of HTC Wizard owners. No need for extra tools to wake overclocking up after a soft reset or standby. I haven't noticed severy battery drain, I can easily use my device a whole day and come home with the batterie well over 50% charged.

It's just a great little program. The integrated overclocking comes as a bonus to the tweak that the program was actualy made for, remapping buttons so you can open the start menu without using your stylus and close programs without using the stylus.

Have a look around on the HTC Wizard Blog, there is lots of other stuff that you may find useful.

15. Updating your MDA to the SHIPPING Imate ROM

1. BACK UP THE FIRMWARE TO AN SD CARD! See my FAQ entry above for this.

2. Get the RUU updater for the Imate ROM and the aWizard unlocker (both from xda-developers). Run the aWizard unlocker to unlock the CID (you DO NOT need to SIM-unlock the phone, but you MUST unlock the CID to do (1) above! DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PROCEED WITHOUT DOING THIS!

3. Run the RUU update. When the selection screen for the operator comes up after its done updating, SOFT RESET.

4. Get the FOLLOWING TWO FILES from the xda-developers T-Mobile-US extended ROM: CAB-Customization-Wizard(AKU1.0)-TMOUSA-01-09-051215 and Signed_TMOUSA_Connection_Wiz10810101.sa. IGNORE THE OTHERS!

5. Run those two IN ORDER (place them on your SD-card, READ-ONLY so they don't get purged after being run)

6. If you want to be able to send MMS Load (in addition to the other two) MT-MMS-WI19-051213-1 and Shorcut-MMS1-CV-Voice-TMO-US-10Nov05

7. For OZIM you need: Signed_OZPocketPC and Signed_Move_IM_Link.sa

You now have:

1. A BARE Imate Load WITH all T-Mobile GPRS/MMS customizations.

2. No OZ IM Client (you can load those off the T-Mo ROM if you want, but I don't!)

3. No Email trigger nonsense (again, you can load this if you want to)

4. No Hotspot nonsense (ditto)

If you WANT, you can load the entire T-Mo extended ROM one piece at a time, but I definitely DO NOT.

If you load only the two above you will consume about FOUR megabytes of storage. That's right - FOUR! You'll have nearly 40MB free in the phone!

The Imate connection button display is FAR better than T-Mobiles - you'll like it better. The NO-Disconnect-EDGE feature is there (END doesn't whack your data session) but you can do so manually from the conneciton manager screen. It appears to be MUCH faster as well.

Only ONE bugaboo I've found - if you downgrade using the SD card the SPL level will NOT go back to its former level. Nothing else is affected though - the T-MO reload works fine.

16. How to perform a hard reset on the MDA

Quote:
To HARD RESET, go to start----> settings--->click on system tab at the bottom. Tap on Clear Storage. Type 1,2,3,4 and hit yes.

If your device is totally busted (can't boot), press connection manager button & voice speed dial button at the same time (2 buttons on the side of the device). while you are holding those 2 buttons, push reset button on the side of the device for a while until you you see a message on the screen (black screen with some text). at this time, just follow the instruction on the screen.

You can do a hard reset at any point. When the black screen comes up it will say "push send to restore", push the send button and your set.

17. GPS Connection Settings

However, Windows Mobile 5.0 includes a GPS Control Panel for ease of configuring Bluetooth GPS devices. This includes creating 'virtual ports' so that multiple programs can access the same NEMA GPS stream from said BT/GPS device. This is helpful for anyone who uses GPS for Navigation, War-Driving and lots of new emerging location-based programs which use GPS information available to your MDA.

Unfortunatly, the Registry Wizard for tweaking the MDA available in this FAQ and over at xda-developers does not work with the T-Mobile ROMs. You have to manually edit the registry by following these instructions:

To Enable:

Show GPS icon (Settings-Connections)

Registry: HKLM\ControlPanel\GPS Settings

Key: Group (dWord)

Value: 2 (Show)

***Note: You must delete 'Redirect' and 'Hide' keys completely***

Soft restart, wait 30 seconds, restart and viola, GPS Control Panel is now enabled.

To rehide the GPS Icon:

Key: Hide (dWord)

Value: 1 (Hide GPS icon).

How I set-up (after BT pairing with the GPS):

Open the new GPS Icon, I then set my GPS Settings on the MDA for 'GPS Program port:' to COM8 (the 'virtual port' for your programs to access the same GPS data) . I then set the 'GPS hardware port:' to COM6. I also set the Baud Rate to 9600 (default for my BT/GPS unit) and checked 'Manage GPS automatically'.

I'm using WiFiFoFum2, Socket MyNavigator and VisualGPSce to simultaneously run utilizing my BT GPS device. It works flawlessly.

18. How do I access Voice Commander on my MDA?

First:

goto "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\OEM\VoiceCommand\Path". Change the default value from "\Windows\SDDialer.exe" to "\Program Files\Voice Command\VoiceCMD.exe".

Now you should be able to activate Micrsoft Voice Command by pressing the connect button on your bluetooth headset. My Scala headset beeps twice when it's ready for the Voice Command. My husbands Motorola headset beeps once when it's ready for the Voice Command.

Then you can also enable your bluetooth headset to receive music and other sound from your MDA by running the tweak "Enable Bluetooth Receive" using the Registry Wizard Program.

(IBM Workplace Client Technology, Micro Edition, Version 5.7 - you want the one entitled "WebSphere Everyplace Micro Environment 5.7.2 - MIDP 2.0 for Windows Mobile 2003 2nd Edition")

You will have to register first, but its free.

This will get you a fully-functional JVM on your machine. Use the WM2003SE link.

Once you have it, go to www.google.com/glm as usual and download the generic MIDP 2.0 client.

Note that this client does display satellite images properly!

Not my original "get" - the hints were over on xda-developers and the Google Local discussion list.

This is WORKING on my MDA. There's a note that there may be a time limit on this - we'll see if it expires on me. If so, I'll have to find a way to buy a "real" copy. The only "gotcha" is that the title list has a funky color scheme until you select one. That's ok - it works.

*NOTE To back up your ROM requires you to use the WHOLE card so you'll need an extra one if you plan to play with your ROM at all on this phone.

PS I don't have any connection to this company other than just passing on a good deal to the forum for those interested. I've been hunting for cards for a while & this is the best deal I'd run across.

24. Must have software tools for MDA

Opera Mobile Beta 2 -- Released yesterday. Whips PIE's butt....sooo fast. Now with tabs (although closing them requires tapping a microscopic X ). Fast, stable, 45 day trial (they should release another beta or final product before the end of the trial though, that's their usual product cycle).

If you use it, you'll want to know how to move Opera Cache to Storage Card (courtesy of carphead at XDA Developers):

You need to copy all of the files from \Application Data\Opera directory onto a directory on your Storage Card. Don't use the \Storage Card\Program Files\Opera but a different one. I use \Storage Card\Application Data\Opera

Edit the lines below in \Application Data\Opera\Opera.ini

Opera Directory=\Storage Card\Application Data\Opera

Home URL=\Storage Card\Application Data\Opera\startpage\home.html

Help Directory=\Storage Card\Application Data\Opera\Help

Then from \Application Data\Opera\ delete everything EXCEPT

Skin Directory

English.lng

Input.ini

Opera.ini

opera6.adr

ONLY THESE FILES need to be left in the directory.

Thats it.

Very important: If you use want to use Opera with Smartskeys, you will want to add it to the exception list in SMartskeys' ini file. Opera does NOT like to be killed via Smartskeys. I wrestled with this last night for a couple hours. If I killed Opera using a right softkey hold (Smartskeys close), I couldn't reopen it until soft resetting. Of course, this means Opera will always be running, but i've noticed it has a reasonable memory footprint. You can always kill it the old fashioned way, and I believe it behaves well with other task managers, but don't go by my word.

Oh, the app title you'll have to put in the ini is 1:Opera Browser Took me forever to figure that out.

http://www.opera.com/products/mobil...s/winmobileppc/

Pros
  • Fast. Seems to render more quickly than pIE
  • Good zoom modes / single column mode.
  • Multiple windows (not tabbed, but still very easy to switch between them)
  • Javascript support

Cons
  • 45 day limit on the beta.
  • Unknown if Opera will offer this browser for free once it's out of beta. It looks like they may charge for it though. $29 isn't TOO bad though.
  • Sometimes gets confused about the available client area for the window. This can cause the horizontal scroll bar to draw behind the menu at the bottom (cannot access it). I only noticed this once though. Presumably this will be fixed at some point.
  • No support for AJAX or other more advanced web scripting languages as far as I can tell.

MiniMo (Mozilla/Firefox for portable devices)

I downloaded version 0.013 from http://www.mozilla.org/projects/minimo/

If the mozilla guys can address the speed issues on slower processors (like the MDA/SDA have) then this very young browser could become a real contender.

Pros
  • Can safely assume this will always be free
  • Based on the same core as the desktop versions of Mozilla/Firefox
  • Support for advanced protocols like AJAX
  • Real tabbed browsing
  • Supports RSS feeds
  • Strong community development support.

Cons
  • Slowest browser I've tried on my MDA. Actual HTML rendering isn't too bad, but startup of the program and accessing menus can be very slow.
  • Still very immature (version 0.013!)
  • Did I mention it is slow?

Currently I have both of these browsers on my MDA trying to figure out which one I want to keep. The speed of Minimo really puts me off, but I'm hopeful that this will be resolved as the product matures. Opera is nice, but I'm not sure I want to pay for it (not THAT nice). And pIE, well, it is what it is.

29. Custom Notifications/Ringers for MDA

1: go to http://public.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php

And type in what you'd like for the notification or ring to say and then

download it after picking a voice. (keep in mind sometimes you have to purposely

misspell certain word to get them to be pronounced correctly. For example for DJ

I had to spell it as d j).

2: rename that file you downloaded into something you'd like.

3: move that .wav file to your devices /windows directory.

4: go to start - settings - sounds & notifications - notifications (select the

event you'd like to change the ring for and select the respectable audio file).

30. Setting up POP3 email on MDA

On your device...

Step 2: Add a new account and enter in your email address, click next twice.

Step 3: Enter your name (The name you want your receivers to see), Enter User Name (Gmail sign on name xxxxxxx the @gmail.com is not needed), Enter Password (Gmail Password), Click save password if you want the information saved so you do not have to enter it each time your device makes a connection.

Step 4: Account Type is Pop3, Name (Whatever you want to call the account) ie: Gmail or Gmail Personal etc...

Step 5: Server Information...

Incoming mail = pop.gmail.com

Outgoing mail = smtp.gmail.com

Domain = blank

After entering in this information click options, do not click finish as your account is not fully set up yet.

Step 6: Auto Connect. Check the box if you want to have your device automatically poll your Gmail account. Set the interval in which you want the device to check ie: 1-60 minutes. (Saving your password is strongly recommened for this) Connection: Whatever you have set up your connection to be (Most use "The Internet" which should be defaulted)

Step 7: If you only want recent messages shown check the "Only display messages from the last", and enter in the amount of past days you want shown. To keep all of your messages leave this box unchecked

Require SSL Connection Box must be checked

Outgoing mail requires authentication must be checked.

Use separate settings must be checked

Do not click next after this point, your box is not set up yet. Click on the "Outgoing Settings" box

Step 8: User name = Gmail sign on name xxxxxxx the @gmail.com is not needed

Password = Gmail password

Domain = blank

Save Password box, again if you are using the automatic check option this is strongly recommened that you check this box

Require SSL for Outgoing Mail must be checked

Click ok. Then click next.

Step 9: Options 3/3 is the message retrevial option. Now in order for your messages to remain in your devices inbox and not be removed each time your device polls your Gmail account you must choose the Get Message Headers Only option. Check the box to "Include" and enter 999kb in the box for message body. This way you can receive all of your emails that are a little less than 1mb in size.

Now if you were to receive a 5mb email all of the body would be shown in your inbox but you would have to manually choose to receive the remaining portion of the email. If you decide to do this, once you receive the entire email you will see it disappear upon your next automatic connection from your device to Gmail. This is a known problem and cannot be resolved. The only work around to date is the 999kb option with Get Header Only. If this changes you can be sure I will post it up.

Step 10: Click Finish. You will see a pop up asking if you want to download mail now and your account is all set up to send and receive.

Dont forget to personalize by adding a signiture and if you wish to not keep sent items, delete items immediately, etc.. Click on menu----tools------options and use the tabs at the bottom.

For Yahoo:

Most of the above steps are the same. However Yahoo does not require ssl connection, outgoing authentication, or separate settings. Also you can receive the entire message with Yahoo pop not Receive Header only and 999kb. You will not loose your email on each auto connection with Yahoo.

Yahoo's servers:

pop.yahoo.com

smtp.yahoo.com

domain = blank

user name is xxxxxxx, the @yahoo.com is not required.

Yahoo pop is not free and requires a monthly/yearly subscription.

If you are a SBCYahoo or ATTYahoo subscriber you can use Yahoo pop with no additional charge.

sbcyahoo servers:

pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com

smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com

username: xxxxxxxx@sbcglobal.net

password: your password

domain = blank

I belive the same is true for the new ATT.

Also I neglected to mention that you can load them on the minisd card (obviously if you have one) to the root folder and they will work. To change it to your new ringone, go to settings > sounds and notifications > notifications tab > change the event to incoming call check play sound and select the sound

NETWORK TIME UPDATE -> HLKM->SOFTWARE->OEM->PhoneSetting

Set "ShowTimeZonePage" to "1"

You can also set "ShowPIN2Page" to "0", since T-Mobile doesn't support PIN2 functions (call barring, etc)

Once this is set, and you have power-cycled, when you go into Settings->Phone you will see a new tab - "Time Zones". Go there and you'll see "Automatic change time zone and clock". Check it and voila - your time updates from the network.

I've been looking for this one for a LOOONG time. Just stumbled upon it....

This is one that T-Mobile has no excuse for NOT including, as most of the other devices support this out of the box!

kd..

that's a good one. That annoys the crud out of me as well. With my old Sprint phone 5 years ago or so..I could hold the phone up as I passed through Chatanooga (CST to EST) and literally watch it jump back an hour automatically when I hit the next cell in the EST zone.

Why in the world can tmobile not do the same? THe days of manually setting a clock forward & back should be OVER.

PS Not sure why everything in the FAQ double-spaced when I sent it. I was previewing it online before and it was single-spaced. I think it must be the way Word is saving the RTF file that I keep sending to the Mod. I'll have to look into getting rid of extra CRLF in the doc so it won't be so long...

The problem is that activesync will bring the pda to sync with your computer's clock. I can see where this may cause issues.

i tried the time zone registry fix and it didn't do anything for me. there is no tab for time zones, even though the registry has "showtimezonepage" set to 1 on the dword. it did get rid of the pin2 page though, so i don't know....

This isn't working for me. Should the showtimezonepage value already be there, because it is not for me. I have tried making it as a dword, and a string, and neither seemed to work.

Interesting - but like some others on the thread above, I also don't see this item under HKLM/Software/OEM/PhoneSetting. I tried adding a DWORD value exactly as you spelled it out ("ShowTimeZonePage") and set it to 1, soft reset, etc, but it has NO effect on phone settings -- no new tab or option is available to turn this on.

Wondering if the fact that 1) you have this value, and 2) it works on your phone, is due to the new ROM you have installed -- I still have the old stock T-Mobile ROM in my MDA.

I did some googling, and older versions of WM (2003 I think?) accomplish this through a different value, "HiddenTimeSyncPage" -- which needs to be set to 0 to allow the option to show on the phone. See this.

...but I don't believe that applies to WM5 and T-Mobile...I tried adding a value like that, and it didn't work either.

Anyone have any idea if the ShowTimeZonePage option works on the shipping T-Mobile extended ROM that comes in the phone?

i'm not sure if i actually did anything, but i think i turned on the option of turning off the electronic shutter sound.

HKLM\Software\HTC\Camera\General\ShutterSound

set the value from 1 to 0 and it should enable the "disable shutter sound" option in the general options area of the camera.
