TUTORIAL: tether to computer with your HTC cell/mobile/smart-phone via ~* USB *~
I was surprised that this type of instructions was not in a place that people could easily find it. There's a sticky thread, TUTORIAL: tether laptop/desktop pc's with your cell phone via BT, but even within this thread no one explained how to connect via USB. There are other posts on HoFo that have the instructions, but I feel they are not written in steps simple enough for most to follow.
You may want to use this procedure if you don't have a bluetooth adapter on your computer (laptop, desktop, notebok, etc.), or just want to use the USB cable.
Fortunately these instructions should be included on the CD you got with your HTC, although missing the initialization string for the data plan. There is an excellent post at this link - http://en.pdamobiz.com/en/forum/for...D=25&PN=1&TPN=1 - that has graphical snapshots of the process.
I have merely taken the text from that post, modified and updated it to match Windows XP and Windows Mobile 5.0
These instructions should work with any mobile device that has the MODEM LINK application on it.
FAQ answer: if your data plan and HTC device are EDGE-enabled, then you should get EDGE transmission speeds. Else, you'll get GPRS speeds.
......
There are several places to get the required files:
on the CD that came with your HTC. On my CD is a folder called USB Modem. The most relevant file here is USBMDM.INF
from the site I referenced above, they call it the "XPhone USB Modem driver for PC", but don't worry - it's that exact same driver that is on the CD, and thus official.
from the Internet. Search for HTC USB modem driver. I found some dated from 2002, 2003 and 2005. As of 2006, I do not believe the driver has been officially updated, so each version is probably the same. (On my CD, the version is from 2003)
Final note: you will not need the USBModem_Dialer.exe for Windows 2000, XP or higher - the instructions below will create a dialer. If you’re on older Windows version, you may need the file.
......
Unattach your HTC from the USB cable, if it is attached. Do not re-attach it until the instructions say to do so.
......
To install the driver, the ActiveSync process MUST be stopped on the computer. Here are the steps to do that:
- right-click on the TaskBar; in the menu that appears, select Task Manager
- in the Task Manager window, click on the Processes tab. Click once on the column heading that says 'Image Name' - this will sort the list alphabetically - then look for the process called wcescomm.exe
- Right-click on wcescomm.exe; from the menu select 'End process'.
- A warning message appears; click on Yes. The ActiveSync icon will soon disappear.
......
ON YOUR HTC
- Tap on Start, tap on Programs, find Modem Link, tap to open.
- in the CONNECTION area, choose USB
- the BAUD RATE area is shaded out; don't worry about it.
- in the ACCESS POINT NAME area, you might NOT be able to change the setting. Don't worry, we'll fix that in a moment.
If you CAN change it, use the name that matches your data plan:
[these names are T-Mobile's current names, as of March 2006]
wap.voicestream.com............TMobileWeb ($5.99)
internet2.voicestream.com.....TMobile Internet ($29.99)
internet3.voicestream.com.....TMobile Internet VPN ($49.99)
(those of you on Cingular, Verizon, etc., you must supply your specific versions of these names)
If you CANNOT change ACCESS POINT NAME, follow these steps:
- Tap on Start, tap on Settings, find Connections. One of the Connections Groups listed here contains the information we need (on my HTC, the group is called 'My ISP'). Tap on 'Manage existing connections'. One of the connections will be called T-Mobile WModem Link. Tap on the Edit button.
- Nothing should be changed here, but ensure that the SELECT A MODEM area is set to Cellular Line (GPRS). Tap on Next at the bottom-right.
- Here is the ACCESS POINT NAME area. Manually type in the name of the data plan you're using (for example, internet2.voicestream.com). Tap on Next at the bottom-right.
- on this page, do not change anything. Tap on Finish at the bottom-right.
- Go back to the Modem Link application
- Final Step: Tap on Activate at the bottom-left.
......
ON YOUR COMPUTER
- If necessary, remove the driver file (called either USBMDM-5.INF or just USBMDM.INF) from the ZIP or RAR; save the INF file somewhere on your computer.
- open Device Manager, expand the Modem tree if needed
one way to do this:
Go to Control Panel, open the System icon, select the Hardware tab, click on the Device Manager button.
- connect the USB cable between the computer and the HTC. Your computer will respond with a 'Found New Hardware' popup.
- If you're asked for the location of the driver, locate the folder where you saved the driver file.
- IF you get a 'Digital Signature Not Found' screen, just click Yes.
- once installation is complete, look at Device Manager, you should have a new item: HTC USB Modem.
- right-click on this HTC USB Modem item, select Properties, click on the Advanced tab.
- in the Extra initialization commands box, type (or copy/paste) the setting that matches your data plan (the letters are NOT case-sensitive):
AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","wap.voicestream.com",""
AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet2.voicestream.com",""
AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet3.voicestream.com",""
Then click on OK.
- Go to Control Panel, then Network Connections, you will find a new connection - HTC USB Modem (Wireless Modem) - has been created automatically.
Now your computer is ready to connect to the Internet.
- click on HTC USB Modem (Wireless Modem), it will connect in a few seconds. A Windows popup will report the connection speed as 230.4kbps - this is the speed between the USB ports on your computer and HTC. The real transfer speed of GPRS varies on where you are, signal, etc.; on average, it is around 40kbps for GPRS, 90kbps for EDGE.
......
RECOMMENDED USAGE
Here are some recommedations for USB tethering.
- Change the modem properties so that the modem will reconnect automatically:
go to Start - Control Panel - Network Connections - right-click on HTC USB Modem (Wireless Modem) - choose Properties - click on Options tab.
Unselect any Dialing Options that might be checked.
Under Redialing options...
-- set Redial attempts: 3
-- Time between redial attempts: 10 seconds
-- Idle time before hanging up: never
-- Check the box, Redial if line is dropped
click OK
- Create a shortcut of the HTC USB Modem (Wireless Modem):
go to Start - Control Panel - Network Connections - right-click on HTC USB Modem (Wireless Modem) - choose Create Shortcut.
You'll get a screen asking to save the shortcut on the Desktop. Choose Yes.
Now you can Connect/Disconnect to the modem conveniently - right-click on the shortcut, choose your action.
- To start a tethering connection, do this:
(1) connect the USB cable between HTC and computer
(2) on the HTC, open Modem Link, choose Activate
(3) on your computer, open the HTC USB Modem (Wireless Modem) connection
- To shut down the connection:
(1) on your computer, Disconnect the HTC USB Modem (Wireless Modem) connection FIRST
(2) on the HTC, open Modem Link, choose Deactivate
(3) Disconnect the USB cable between HTC and computer
If you need to shutdown the connection temporarily - for example, to make/take a phone call - just do step (1). You can leave MODEM LINK activated (this should not interfere with other HTC functions).
I figured out how to fix the deal if you end up with that annoying PPP error (which I did). Its a really simple thing:
In the shortcut you make for the Modem Dialer, there will be four lines: "username", "password", "AIN", and "modem". Make those four lines look like this:
username: <blank> (nothing to input here)
password: <blank> (nothing to input here)
AIN: "wap.voicestream.com" or "internet2.voicestream.com" or "internet3.voicestream.com" (whatever your MDA says in the 'access point name' box under Modem Link, make the AIN line say the same thing)
modem: HTC USB Modem
Its that simple. The PPP hang-up happens because the AIN line is looking for a different thing that what the MDA is offering. For me, the AIN line defaults to "Internet", and so it goes to the MDA looking for the access point name, "Internet". If you make the AIN on the computer and the access point name match, viola, no more PPP error and you can connect.

stecel, I remember reading in the MDA FAQ that the BB plan WILL NOT work on the MDA/SDA. You can do a search on 'Blackberry' within the MDA/SDA forum to confirm this.
I followed all of your instructions and couldn't get USB modem to connect. Turns out I was not telling it to dial *99#, so maybe you could add that to your instructions.

no doubt!!! with the *99# and I have Rom 2.21 I didn't even need to do anything other than install the driver to my laptop. Dial up networking and I'm jammin'
I've been looking all over for this number, everythings workin' kick Azz!
