Vk2020

The VK2020 needs its own thread. I'll kick it off:

Got it today from www.wapzon.com. They have the best price. Took about ten days from order to arrival. They are in Malaysia. Observations:

Very thin...much more so than the razr. Its actually shorter and narrower too.

Build quality is good.

The keyboard is very razr-like, as it is etched with raised rubberish gaskets in between the keys. The keboard is smaller than the razr.

Bluetooth works great. Compared to the Samsung "credit card" P300, much better, at least in terms of working with my car's bluetooth system.

It is QUAD band. You can select between North American (850/1900) and rest of world (800/1800) settings.

Screen is nice and bright, but much smaller than the razr.

Comes with a PC Sync software disk. Doesn't appear to import from Outlook, which makes it sort of worthless. Nor does it work with bluetooth, as the manual is silent on this. I actually can't even get the computer to recognize it when connected to the USB.

Motorola Phone Tools, which works with the Razr, is much better software as it works with bluetooth and imports from Outlook.

Comes with a European charger, so you have to go to Radio shack and get a $5 adapter. The USB also charges the battery.

Pictures, taken by Jehlinger, are posted here:

I'm very pleased wtih this phone and will be selling my razr on Ebay. Its too big.

Stic,

what kind of car do you have? I would like to have it work with my BMW.

Any comments on the antenna strength? Battery life?

How are you importing your contacts?

And finally, do you know any one with a mac to see if it is recognized by iSync?

Can you provide more details regarding functionality and build quality as compared to the Samsung p300 since I am looking at both phones?

I purchased a P300 and then sold it and then bought the VK2020. I prefer the VK because:

Quadband vs. only Triband on the P300. In my area, I was roaming all of the time as the towers around me seem to be 850 vs. 1900. The P300 only has 1900.

Better bluetooth, at least as far as the carkit in my car is concerned. The VK automatically connects whereas I had to manually connect every time w/the P300 (this was a deal-breaker for me w/the p300).

I thought the way that the battery door "locks" on the P300 was poorly done and could wear out over time. The VK has a much more conventional battery door.

The VK has a nicer keyboard, as its a more modern razr-like style.

The VK is quite a bit better looking. I don't particularly care about that, but the P300 looks more like a calculator.

And, the VK seems to be much cheaper that the P300. Go figure.

I have a BMW too. A 2006 330 w/Idrive. The bluetooth link automatically fires up when you get in the car, which is what its supposed to do (P300 didn't do that). What is NOT working, so far, is phonebook transfer. I'm either doing something wrong or it won't ever work. The Razr has the best bluetooth functionality of any phone I've tried in the car. Better than a Treo 650 or a Kjam.

I'm used to a razr, which had crappy battery life. This seems just as good if not better than that, but I've only had the thing for two days, so can't really tell yet.

Signal strength is great where it should be. I've got five bars here at the office.

I'm having to import contacts via the SIM as the PC Sync that comes with the phone does not import from Outlook. Eventually that might be updated by VK or maybe some third party software will come out.
So, I'm going to put more numbers on my SIM w/another program then copy them from the SIM to the VK, which is pretty easy.

Sticman,

You can get phone numbers into the phone with PCSync from Outlook although it's a little convoluted.

Export from Outlook using DOS .csv file format, setting (mapping) individual fields in the following order:
Name - as in Full Name
Mobile Number
Home Number
Office Number
Fax Number
email address
(these are the only entries that you can import)

Now open PCSync and click the "Import" tab.
Find your file
A box will pop up with fields, the right side being blank
Click the box on the right and a field will pop up from the .csv file
Select which field to map to whatever field on the left you like
Click OK and it will load all those contacts
Place a check by those you want to load into the phone (up to 1000)

Lightbulb How to get PCSync working:

How to get PCSync working:
  1. On the phone - go to Menu>Settings>PC Connection>PC Sync (should be this by default)
  2. Install the software on your PC BEFORE you connect the phone with the USB cable (if you already installed uninstall it and re-install)
  3. Make sure the phone is on and connect to your PC.
  4. When it recognizes the phone XP will ask for drivers.
  5. Point it to the specific location of the drivers (Program Files>VK Mobile> PC Applications v4.0>drivers) it should find and install the driver.
  6. Look in Start>Control Panel>Phone and Modems Options> for the VK USB Modem and note the com port.
  7. Now Launch VKPCSync40 and it will ask for username and password, click register and create a username and password.
  8. Now log in with the created username and password.
  9. Now a window will pop up asking what com port the phone is connected to> Input the com port previously noted.
  10. It should say "Phone Found" and then you're in; you can do all the stuff listed in the program manual.

I thought I'd copy this over to this thread just in case....

The battery cover thing worries me...the bluetooth kit issue doesn't as I drive a car far too old and far too crap to have all that going on. I hated the RAZR so I dunno if I will like the vk2020 better than the Samsung.

As a comparison to the RAZR, I like the keypad better on the VK2020 as there are raised ridges between the keys that give a better feel as to which key you're pressing.

OK, websites are still advertising that it has 1gb NAND flash memory. Either they're clueless (big possibility) or it's in there and I just can't see it.

Is there some trick to get it to recognize that memory?

It would really be a killer device if it had the 1gb memory. And speakerphone and A2DP.

edit: even VK Mobile's website shows 1gb nand flash memory. I'm going to raise a stink.....not that it'll do any good.

VK200 vs VK2020

I just received the VK2000. It was in transit when the VK2020 came out. Do you guys think I should upgrade? So far the VK2020 seems to work very well. The only problem i have had in to days is it froze twice when I pressed 1 to get voice mail.

If bluetooth is a desirable feature I would consider upgrading. Or if you desire to have about 96mb available for mp3s. Otherwise I'd stick with the vk2000, and wait for a vk phone to come out that really has the 1gb memory.

That makes sense. The outlook sync is a must using cable or bluetooth.

Then I would consider upgrading/exchanging if possible. Although you cannot sync via bluetooth with the vk2020, you have to use the USB cable.
