Tutorial: VX8300: How to upgrade/downgrade your firmware W/Pics

Much of this information has been posted in the V02 discussion thread...

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=978807

However, some people seem to be having trouble. So hopefully this will save me from a few PM's.

Things needed:
  • A phone
  • A PC (These instructions are written for the windows platform)
  • A data cable (bluetooth will not work)
  • A copy of LGDownload (I recommend version 1.3.6.3)
  • The VX8300 Dll
  • LG USB Modem Drivers
  • A copy of the bin files required for the flash you would like to perform.
    http://rapidshare.de/files/36344890/T83VZV03.rar
All of the software and bin files need have been conveniently packaged in a flash kit by me. PM votetrev or myself for details." Please go here to get it.

Part 1: How to flash your phone to V02

This is really easy and if done correctly, painless. You shouldn't lose anything from your phone but you may want to backup your files (pics, ringers, GIN apps/games, contacts) just in case.

1. Unzip the contents of the flash kit.

2. Make sure you have your phones driver installed and your PC recognizes it.

3. Install LGDownload v1.3.6.3, reboot your PC when prompted.

4. Install the VX8300 Dll.

5. Connect your phone to your PC and start LGDownload.

6. Make sure your in upgrade mode and for the "Bin File Path:", browse to T83VZV02.bin located in the Firmware V02 directory you extracted earlier.

7. Make sure NO OTHER fields are filled out. (See screen shot below)

8. Click the "Upgrade Download Start" button.

10. The SPC input box will pop up, It should already be filled out. If not, type the SPC (000000) in and click "OK"

11. Sit back and relax. The program will read your NV and EFS items, then burn the firmware bin and NV, EFS items to the phone. The process will take between 10 and 20 minutes (depending on how much stuff you have on your phone)

12. When done, the following window will pop up...

make sure you click END and not continue. If you click the continue, the flash process will start all over again.

OK, that's it. You should have a working 8300 V02. Check to make sure the MOD player doesn't freeze your phone. If it does, refer to the downgrade/refurbish tutorial below.

Part 2: Downgrading your phone to V01 or refurbishing (fixes the MOD player freeze)

If for some reason you want to go back to V01 or maybe your having the MOD player freeze issue or some other problem, this section is for you.

I've decided to put the downgrade and refurbish info in one guide because basically there is only one extra step involved for the refurbish method. I copied my tutorial from the V02 discussion thread and added some screen shots. So if it looks familiar, you know why.

If you just want to downgrade to V01 you can skip steps 5 and 6. Otherwise, perform the steps in order.

1. Make sure you have a data cable (bluetooth will not work), the usb drivers installed for your phone, the VX8300 DLL and LGDownload v1.3.6.3 installed. (Uninstall v1.6 if you have it installed)

2. Get yourself a copy of the complete VX8300 flash kit and extract the contents (all zipped files need to be extracted).

3. Backup anything you don't want to lose, we will be basically erasing the filesystem of the phone. So, any pics, ringers, hacked files, downloaded games and apps should be backed up before proceeding.

4. Plug your phone in to your PC and fire up LGDownload.

5. Press ctrl+r to start refurbish mode.

6. Browse to the T83VZV01_11.SCR file located in Firmware V01\T83VZV01 and click the "Refurbish Start" button, then the OK button for SPC. Let it do it's thing. It should take about 2 minutes to complete.

7. When the refurbish process is completed, go back to "Upgrade" (F8).

8. In the "BIN File Path:", browse to T83VZV01.bin.

9. In the "SCR File Path:", browse to the same SCR file in step 6.

10. For "PRL File Path:", browse to the 50547_EVDO_OEM_Voice_Default_0502.prl file.

11. For the "ERI File Path:", browse to the ERI_binary_00004_with_crc_2005_03_29.bin file.

12. Click the "Upgrade Download Start" button and then the OK button for SPC. Sit back and relax. The process should take about 10 minutes.

13. When it's done, while still in the upgrade window, browse to the T83VZV02.bin file located in the Firmware V02 folder.

14. Make sure ALL other fields are blank. (Ie: No SCR, PRL or ERI files loaded). -refer to Part 1: Step 7

15. Click the "Upgrade Download Start" button and then the OK button for the SPC. Sit back and relax. Once again, the process should take around 10 minutes.

16. When the process is done, a window will pop up. Make sure you click on "END" and not continue. If you click continue the process will start all over again.

That's it. When done you should have a factory default, fully functional 8300 V02 in need of initial programing. Do a *228 1, restore your backed up files and you should be all set.

note: If you ever want to sell your phone, the refurbish method will restore it to factory default. Basically exactly how it would come from Verizon.

You should consider a career as a Technical report writter. Writting procedures is part of my job. That's a great procedure..
