No. The SIM is locked to the IMEI of the Tracfone that came with it.

I am just being prompted for a SIM PIN. Does anyone have an idea what this would be?

You are only prompted for a SIM PIN if you've enabled this security feature. It appears that you may have inadvertently done so. Check the manual for your phone and it should tell you what the default PIN code is.

I am not technically the user of the phone, so that is very possible.

So this is confirmed, a Tracfone SIM can never be used with any other phone than the one it is registered to... ?

I would assume buying a sim off ebay is practically useless then..

the SIM PIN is a number that tracfone made for your specific IMEI number

THEY WILL NOT GIVE IT TO YOU CUZ THEY WANT YOU TO USE THERE BRAND NAME PHONES

REMEMBER IF U TRY TO ENTER THE SIM PIN
5-8 WRONG TRIES YOUR PHONE WILL DISPLAY ENTER PUK CODE
ENTER THAT WRONG 4 TIMES YOUR SIM CARD IS NO LONGER GOOD THAT MEANS BUY A NEW PHONE CUZ U JUST DISABLED YOUR SIM CARD

A SIM PIN is not the same as a SIM lock. Tracfone SIM locks their phones (as does every GSM carrier); however, the SIM PIN is not enabled by default on Tracfones. It is a user enabled security feature designed to protect the user from unauthorized use by another person. The default SIM PIN is always listed in the user manual (it's typically 1234 on Nokia phones). It can (and should) be changed by the user to something that the user can easily remember. If you do forget your SIM PIN and lock yourself out of your phone (typically it's 3 tries - your user manual will tell you how many tries you have before you are locked out), Tracfone will give you the PUK to unlock your phone if you can verify that you are the owner of the phone. If, on the extreme off-chance, you are technically challenged and enter the PUK incorrectly multiple times and disable your SIM, Tracfone will send you a new SIM. You do not have to buy a new phone.

The interesting part is that I have rebooted this phone multiple times, and i have not received a prompt for a pin number. I wonder if the handset enters this automatically, and is a cheap method of keeping me from popping in the SIM into another device.

If you have not enabled the SIM PIN, you will not receive a prompt for it. It's a user-enabled security feature; not a Tracfone one.
