Interesting conjunction of wifi and prepaid tmobile cellular: people want internet access but at reasonable prices. Free is better of course!
Euro Starbucks also partner with Tmobile Hotspots. US Hotspot subscribers can no longer roam internationally for free. Rates are somewhat less than hotel rates for wifi 10 GBP for 24 hours and 40 GBP for 7 days access (I think) in London.
Here's the tip: Euro Tmobile customers can have pay as you go access: 75 pence for ten minutes in UK and in Germany 2 euros for 15 minutes. Not cheap but very reasonable if you use an offline mail reader ( I use outlook express) and want to surf for a few minutes or download pages for later reading. The definition of a Tmobile customer includes prepaid mobile customers! I was able to send a text ("open") to 9526 and immediately got back a login ID and password using a German prepaid account (sim card). I expect you can also use a UK prepaid account though I didn't check this out personally. I tried to enable my US based Tmobile account for pay as you go access but it did not go through. I was also able to use the same ID and password in a German Starbucks at Frankfurt airport though the pay as you go wifi tariff was 2 euros for 15 minutes.
So; get a Tmobile prepaid sim in UK or Germany and get metered / pay as you go wifi access in any Starbucks without having to opt for the daily, weekly or monthly rate. Make sure the sim has sufficient balance. This may apply in other European Starbucks but YMMV.
More information under tariffs on the Tmobile Hotspots login page.
