Memo To: MICC Operators and their Authorized Representatives
Applies To: All US Markets and International (Non-US) Markets
From: iDEN Subscriber Group
Subject: Copying Digital Items to Micro SD Cards
Kits affected: i580/i870/i875/i888/i885

Quote:
Purpose:

The purpose of this bulletin is to communicate the process of copying Unprotected Digital Items to i580, i870, i875, i880 and i885 handsets. This bulletin will also explain the difference between Protected and Unprotected Digital Items.

Description:

Motorola iDEN has received numerous inquiries from our customers regarding the inability to copy digital items to their Micro SD cards. In an effort to assist our customers, we have identified the following areas of concern and have outlined the process for copying Unprotected Digital Items to i580, i870, i875, i880 and i885 handsets.

 Protected Digital Items

 Unprotected Digital Items

Copying Digital Items to Micro SD cards

Protected Digital Items:

Protected digital items such as ringtones and wallpapers are digitally protected and cannot be copied or moved. In the event that an attempt is made to move or copy protected items, the above handsets will generate the message..

Protected Media:
Cannot Copy

Unprotected Digital Items:

Video clips and audio clips are unprotected digital items. Pictures taken with a handset and upload to a computer with the Media Downloader application are also considered unprotected digital items. These unprotected digital items can be copied or moved to the Micro SD card by the process outlined below.

Copy or move unprotected Wall Papers, Pictures, and Audio files to Micro SD cards:

Ensure the memory card is properly inserted in the memory slot.

From the Main Menu select “Media Center” and press “OK.”

Select the Unprotected picture, wallpaper, audio file or ringtone you wish to copy or move and press the “Menu” button.

Scroll down, select “Copy to Card” or “Move to Card” then select “OK.”

If the media is protected a screen will appear as depicted in figure 1 above “Protected Media Cannot Copy/Move” otherwise it will start copying or moving the digital items.

copy protection to restrictive!

What about ringtones or wallpapers a user created themselves? I have several on my i580 and I lost the source files that were on my pc. Now I cannot copy them to the card to put them back on my PC. This sucks!

someone please correct me if i'm wrong, but i think if you load any media to your phone via a JAL loader, it becomes protected media.
i think you might be able to circumvent this by loading media via bluetooth. i don't have any way of testing this right now, so maybe someone can confirm or deny it.
