The Official Samsung SCH-U740 "Alias" Thread

Since the phone was released today, I figured I'd start this. Feel free to post any pictures and thoughts on this phone if you already have it.

Snapped a pic from my KRZR on the way home...the charger doesn't appear to be USB (people may know that already) so I guess I'll need to get another car charger.

I can do a side-by-side with the KRZR, 7130e and a 700p if anyone is interested.

Just got mine. Fooling around with it now. Will let everyone know what I think later. So far, nice phone. takes a little to get used to the keyboard. takes great pics. Mp3 player is integrated with the vcast music. You can load your own mp3 music onto a microsd card without a problem and music plays through the vcast player. great call sound with speaker and headset. very nice so far.

Glad it's finally out...hopefully my requirements will be covered with this one as I need a phone badly.

Can't find an on-line user manual, so maybe you new users can answer:

1. Does it sync (calendar and contacts) with Outlook on a PC?
2. Does the contact list include addresses, or just phone/email?

If it has these covered, the rest is gravy....let's hear those reviews!

I'm thinking about running out and getting one at lunch time. This may have been answered in the Pre-release mega thread and I ask it about all new phones but are you able to view text messages on the outside screen?

Also, sparky being a fellow KRZR owner how would you compare the two in feel and sturdiness? Is the U740 easy to flip open with one hand - how's the hinge?

Thanks,
Josh

From what I can tell so far is that it supports Wireless Sync so you should have email, calendar and contacts. I'm about to add an email account so I'll follow up with more info. The contacts app supports multiple contact numbers and two email addresses but I don't see an address field.

Does the mini-USB data cable allow it to charge while connected via USB?

Also, is there a headphone jack or is it only BT?

Thanks for the pic!

A few questions...

-Compatibility with bitpim.
Can BitPIM view the filesystem?
Can BitPIM read/write contact info using another phone selection under options?

Can you Email Ringers to the phone?
Can you set those ringers as actual ringtones?
Does this phone have MY SOUNDS?
Can you set MY SOUNDS as ringtones?
Can you put ringtones on a microSD card and set them as ringers, either as Sounds or Ringtones.

Does DUN/Bluetooth dun work using the trick with the Qualcom Service programming porogram?

Does the a950 PST work with this phone?
Can you enable the hidden GIN menu to edit WAP settings?

What does this phones hidden menu contain? Go to settings and tools-> hit the star key, and enter all zeroes as the password.

OK, I think those are all the question I have so far.

I sent myself a test SMS and couldn't figure out how to view it on the front screen - that may be where the ENV has an advantage. There may be something in the user manual but who reads those?!?!

Compared to the KRZR, the u740 doesn't feel quite as solid. It seems that the KRZR has a metal frame (I may be wrong) while the Samsung has a little more plastic. The hinge is good but there is a little movement when closed but it doesn't seem to be a lot. Personally, I'm willing to sacrifice the feel to have the keyboard.

Wow. Yeah, that's pretty much the perfect list of questions. If there are affirmative answers to most of them, I'll be getting the u740 this afternoon.

Actually, it appears there is a single connection that supports power and headphones - pretty cool really. The included adapter connects into the phone and has multiple connections on the other end - standard headphone jack, proprietary headphone jack and a power connection. I don't see any USB connection other than on one of the connectors that shows a power icon and USB icon. I'm wondering if there is another accessory USB adapter.
