Most of us are sold on the free program Mologogo. http://www.mologogo.com It uses Google Maps for the mapping and your unit's internal AGPS receiver for the coordinates. The program meshes the maps with the coordinates fairly quickly, but does not offer turn-by-turn... just A to B like Mapquest does before you scroll down to get the turn-by-turn directions. It's like, plot a destination, and then you're homing in on it. We like this program because Jason, the creator, is a contributor here on HoFo... he is also VERY receptive to any new ideas through the forums he hosts on his site. Consider this my testimonial.
There are other "pay-to-play" Java-based solutions such as Trimble, which is excellent... another one called FindMe, which kind of sucked... and the old standard you already mentioned, TeleNav.
On the i930 platform, we've even hacked some Tom Tom apps, but there were major problems with the voice feature. Some users noted instability on the phone. Some couldn't run it at all.
