Help out a new user to Blackberry Curve

I was hoping someone here can help me out to a question i have that might be silly or pretty obvious but i might as well ask anyways.

I just gotten the curve 8900 as a gift and i don't have the cd or transfer cable it originally comes with. My question is do i need the cd to do any file transfer with the cable? if no then whats the whole point of the cd? thanks

You can download Desktop Manager directly from BlackBerry's website. The data cable, yeah, you need one of those.
