Thumbs up Making Ringtones for Dummies

First off, let me begin with a little introduction of myself. My name is Justin, and I am a little bit of an electronics junkie to say the least. I am not affiliated with any cell phone company at all. I am just simply a consumer just like you that firmly believes in not having to pay for any ringtones. When I first started these thoughts, my main idea of thinking was that I could have a different ringtone for every person in my list of contacts. You wouldn’t believe the amount of times I had been somewhere and heard someone’s cell phone ring, and think, “Wow, what a boring ringtone, if that person only knew how easy it was to get a cool sounding ringtone, maybe even of their favorite song”. On my behalf, I figured it would be nice to hear who it was, rather than by looking at the Caller ID displayed. So, my gain is your gain as well. If you follow a few simple ways as listed below, you can create the same basic idea, or just at least have cool custom ringtones.

I have used this same method for use on my former LG-VX8300 and now on my current Env2 cell phone (follow link for review, http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/LG-...ew-r_1945.html), which is with Verizon, but I am willing to bet that the procedures below may work for other carriers and similar style of phones. I do know that the methods DO NOT work on the Razor series of phones (Or at least I have not been able to get it to work for me, someone else may have better luck). Also, I will apologize if some of the information is too basic for some, but I want for everyone to be able to understand the process.

Also, for any of these methods, you will need to have Texting available on your phone to receive the ringer via a text message. Also, I recommend purchasing a MicroSD memory card for your phone, which you can find pretty easily, and then setup your phone so everything gets saved to it. See your instruction manual for an easy how to guide on saving sounds/pictures to the card.

I have a few different methods of creating/getting ringtones. First off, go into your “My Documents”, and create 2 new folders, 1 called “Ringers”, and 1 called “Ringers to Create”. These will serve as your basic folders to save everything to for ease of finding.

Method 1; (The Easiest Possible Way That I Know Of)

We are going to download/save a pre-made ringer now with step by step instructions.

Step 1; Go to the following website; http://audiko.net/ringtone , (I know there are several sites such as this, this is just my preferred site to use) you can scan through the different categories and find something that interests you. Once you find something that interests you, go to Step 2. Or what we are going to do is find our own ringer. Go just above where it says “Top 100”, and type in Good Ride Cowboy (this is what we are going to use as our example) and hit Enter. Select the entry that does not look like Russian text. Now proceed to Step 2.

Step 2; Once the small box is loaded, play the song to see if it is what you want, if it is, select the “Download mp3 ringtone on desktop”, Select “Save” on the pop-up, and save it into the “Ringers to Create” folder that you created. Close the download box after it completes.

Step 3; Open up your Yahoo! Email (this is who I use because I know it works, plus it’s free), in your contacts, save a new contact with your cell phone info, for Verizon, you would save 5551234567@vzwpix.com (adjust it to your actual cell number). Start a new email; address the email to your cell phone contact, and also to your own Yahoo! Email address. I also created a folder in my email called “Ringtones” to save the ringers in my email. (This feature is pretty convenient too, for example, you are at a friend’s house, and they want a ringer that you don’t have saved as a text message, you can simply get into your Yahoo email, and hit forward to send it out). Now attach the ringer that we downloaded to the email. Name it, hit Send. Once you receive the email, move it into your “Ringtones” folder.

Step 4; Now you should have received a new text message on your phone too. To save it, open the text message, Select options, and then save as ringtone, name it if you need to, save”. Now you have a ringtone on your phone. If you want to be able to forward to other people, then you have to keep it as a text message. You cannot forward saved media otherwise. To prevent yourself from deleting it, you can lock the message. Re-open the text message, Select options, and then lock. That’s it.

Method 2; Not quite as simple, But still easy

Step 1; (If you already have a saved MP3, skip this step, and start with Step 2). Go to the following website www.filehippo.com, Locate the download for a program called Cabos. Download it and run it. Cabos will serve as your main search engine for getting music. In the search window, type in friends in low places. Click sources on the right to bring the most amount of download sources to the top. Select the file you want to download and double click it to begin the download. At the top, Select view then show downloads. This will show the progress of a download. Once the download is complete, you can select “reveal in explorer” by right mouse clicking on the song, which displays the location of where the file downloaded to. Now you have a saved MP3 that you downloaded, next we need to upload/convert it into a ringtone. You can also go back into Cabos, right mouse click one of the downloaded files, select clear all completed. On to step 2.

Step 2; (You now have an MP3 to use to convert into a ringtone). Go to the following web site http://makeownringtone.com/, On the left, select upload, and locate the MP3 that you want to make a ringer, select the file, and begin the upload, this process normally takes 1-2 minutes to upload, just be patient. To the right of where you see that the sound waves are, drag that slider down about 1/3. (Tip- if you make the ringer, and it is super-loud, then you need to bring it down a little more, and re-do it). Now, adjust your bit-rate down from 96 to 32. Now, you need to figure out what your favorite 25-30 seconds of the song are. Click on the song where you want the ringer to start, and drag the black line out to the right to get your total 25 or so seconds. You can mouse over the selected section and drag it to the right or left to get to the proper portion of the song if you need to. Once you think you have it where it needs to be, hit the “selected” button, which plays the selected portion of the song. When you have it set where you want it, select the “make a ringtone button”. You now have the option to re-play what you just made. If you are satisfied with it, right mouse-click “download ringtone” and select “save target as”. Now name and save the file into the “Ringers” folder that you created earlier. Close the download window that popped up now. Now go back to Steps 3 and 4 of Method 1 to complete the process.

For getting pictures onto my cell, I use the Micro card, and a flash drive adapter to transfer. For other pics, I use www.phonezoo.com , you create an account on there, setup your profile, and you can text yourself pictures, or some other sounds too. If you wish to locate me on there to see some of my uploads, downloads, ringers and pictures, Simply do a search for docster68, then select people, there you will find me.
