I don't think any phone manufacturer provides software updates through Linux. I'd be surprised if you could update a G1 or a Pre on Linux and those are Linux-based phones.
That's why I'll never leave Windows. A Windows partition is always needed, even if it isn't your primary OS. You'll always have something to fall back when updating your phone. Else, find a friend or relative who has a Windows PC and update your phone from his/her PC.

Sorry but you'll have to use Windows one way or another - either borrowing someone else's PC, installing Windows on a partition on your own PC or installing it through VMWare, VirtualBox or something similar so you can run Windows from within Linux. I wouldn't trust WINE for installing firmware.
Otherwise, switch to a phone manufacturer that supports Linux for their firmware updates... if that even exists.

When I sent my 6650 for repair a little while ago, the page that I got back with my phone said UPDATE, so I assumed there was one....
I really have no idea. Is that just a standard line from Nokia?

From Nokia's standpoint, why pay the money to develop an application used by a small percentage of the market? Last time I checked, the programmers at Nokia don't work for free!!
