Cellular Phone : Status Symbol or Necessity?

Im scared of starting this poll! Well anyways... Im positive that a cell phone was or still is a status symbol. I for one mod up my phone cause I don't have a car to soup up . Some of my friends do the same.

[Edit : EEK Sy,bol!! Symbol for those of you who dont know... Typing with ice cream cone in other hand.]

It can be both, and for me it depends on my locale.

Here in the USA it aint such a necessity, I use it more as a status symbol and a WOW factor, and to some extent for SMSs.

In Greece, where ALL my friends and acquaintances have GSM mobiles, AND I can SMS anyone on the globe (not like here with the "you can SMS only withing the USA" bull crap provided by voicestrea ) ... I use my phone partly as a status symbol since I have the more rare and expensive phones, but those phones see A LOT of use voice, data and SMS!
(holly son of a gun.. I remember trying to schedule 3 dates at the same day last summer... I ended up going out with three girls one day/afternoon/night... one right after another lol... that was fun... of course I slept about 3 hours in a 48 hour period but that is another story )

Only the expensive, rarer phones are status symbols. Phones that are modded to death are status symbols. Otherwise, it is further away from status than realized. The way how many youths are spoiled to the brink is one indication. I can't remember how many 11-12yr old elementary students have cellphones. They flock the malls chirping away, while their parents cringe. Cellphones has become quite the necessity that gas stations sell them (G310).

Its more of a necessity,i can communicate with family and friends back home in the Philippines via txt messagges, get a hold of my wife anytime.Hard too believe but the cell phone has become an indespensable gadget, does'nt matter what technology it is.The floss or wow factor just comes in secondary in my opinion.Same thing can be asked of the car, right.Holla!!!!!!

necessity, living on my own and on a tight budget i can't afford a land line AND a cell phone, so i go with a cell phone. plus i'm on call sometimes so a cell is really necessary for that.

Lightbulb

Everyone in my family has asthma, except me. I have a rare form of diabetes. When I go into insulin shock I can't drive very well, or find my way home. We also do a lot of activities like camping, hiking, hunting, paintball, volleyball, so we are rarely home. I think that makes the phones a necessity.

As far as status, my phone still has the default ringtone, no custom faceplate, and the standard operator logo. I have no accessories at all on my 5190. (Ok, I have a leather belt holster). I think that means it is not much of a status symbol.

Now if I could come up with a really weard ringtone that NOBODY elese has, then I'll use it!

So your V60 is big enough for you to "cover up"?
