The Quintessential Guide to Exchange and Windows Mobile Connectivity

I'm hoping to make this thread a sticky so we can discuss Exchange and connectivity with Windows Mobile. I know that a lot of people out there have questions about how to setup their exchange servers and how to route security and mails. Please post your questions here and I will be able to answer them. Don't forget, this includes outsourced Exchange servers as well. If you want to build your own cluster, I could help with that as well. I'm looking forward to hearing from all HoFo members that use Windows Mobile.

Could you just make a general how to on it?- you've been an endless fountain of knowledge on the other thread. The cluster how to should be very educational as well.

TIA

awesome idea. My question is, is there a way to setup two exchange account using Outlook 2003 on my PC?

coming back to the question whether to go with 1and1 and 4smartphone. I had a very good chat with an operator of 4smartphone. He was very knowledgeable and extremely helpful. Debating now whether to go with 4smartphone pro or 1and1. Both offer similar services for $6.95/mo. White Rabbit suggested 1and1, anyone willing to report on their impression of the 4smartphone pro service?

I like 4smartphone's pro service and they had the autd update well before 1and1. However, I don't really like the standard service as it will not work with microsoft outlook

when I send an email from an account linked to a hosted Exchange server (in my case 4smartphone), the email is not placed in the sent folder on my device. Is that normal (even though I specfied in the mail preferences that all emails should be placed in that folder)?

I did notice that they were placed in the sent folder on the exchange account (webmail) though ...

Any suggestions on what to tell our infrastructure guys to do to get this working?

We've already got OWA and OMA going just fine. However, when I try to sync to the server, I get a 500 error.

Wow, some great questions out there. I'll answer these 1 by 1.

@bedrich
I'm working on this but there are so many structures so I may be covering one structure after another. I need to develop a clean way to present the info so it makes sense and isn't confusing. Most of the MS stuff is very inconcise and vague to the point where it isn't useable.

@tschabo
Good question. Here's a thought: How about running an instance of outlook on native PC and then an instance of Outlook through Terminal Server on the Windows 2003 Server? You can have both Outlooks open at the same time then. I still preefer 1and1 for personal outsourced exchange. ASP-One is fast and flexible but costs more. As for MI8, they are one of the top ones to deal with. If you can deal with running your own Exchange server, I would still suggest it for people that want the extra power. TSchabo regarding sent mails, (SYNCHRONIZE YOUR SENT FOLDER!!!!!) To do this, go to Activesync or Outlook E-mail account on the PPC and then hit Tools --> Manage Folders --> check whichever folders you want to sync.

@hanfeitzu
You should open up ports for Activesync (80, 8080) Also make sure that you specify SSL or non-SSL. If those are already good then I would suggest taking a look at the FQDN of the server and make sure that your DNS resolves from external to internal with the correct FQDN. If you don't use the FQDN for Activesync, you won't be able to Activesync.

Once again, thanks so much. I am able to sync the sent folder now. That's so awesome!!! Since I signed up with 1and1, I don't think I can login to their terminal server... Doesn't matter since I just use exchange webmail for my work account and use outlook for my personal account.

I signed up for the 1and1 exchange hosting, so, I'll be a regular in this thread (with questions). Here are two to start with...

When I open the Exchange webmail page for my account, I notice some weird thing on two of my PCs but not on my laptop. When you right click on the Inbox or any other folder in the left panel, you have the option to create a new folder. Well, only on the laptop, a new window pops up that lets me add a new folder. However, two of my PCs don't let me do that since that window does not pop up. What I noticed that the laptop uses Microsoft VM while the PCs use JRE. Could that be the difference? It is NOT the google pop-up blocker since I have it installed on every PC and I even turned it off on the PCs and the window still wouldn't come up...

Do you guys know if I have to pay for the SMS sent for the OTA syncs? I checked my Cingular account and I don't see them listed in the messaging list...

How are you enjoying 1and1 service so far? Do you find it better than your trial with 4smartphone? Does 1and1 have autd feature?

honestly, I should have sticked with 4smartphone that I used for a trial. Notice thought that I only tried out the 4smartphone xpress feature and I had no problems with it. In the beginning, the OTA sync process seemed slow but it got better shortly afterwards (maybe since I complained about it to tech support). Since I wanted to use Outlook at home, I had to either go with the pro service 4smartphone offers or the standard 1and1 service (both for $6.95).

What I liked about 4smartphone:
- you can chat with technical support and they were extremely helpful and knowledgeable (of course, you can also email and call them...)
- they provide you with an exchange username you can remember. Here and there, you need to enter that account name for some settings. Try to remember an account name e+{9 digits} as 1and1 is assigning (I asked if they can change it -> no way).
- they have much superior information and documentation on how to setup your mobile device for wireless sync. I finally got 1and1 working to, but I had to look for the information in a bunch of PDFs while 4smartphone has just a single page with everything on it.

The reason I went with 1and1. Alex aka white rabbit recommended 1and1 and I am thinking about hosting my website eventually by 1and1 and manage my domains through them, too.

If I had do it over again, I'd chose 4smartphone. Still thinking about canceling 1and1 and signing up with them. I will see how the next days turn out...

Plz keep us posted... Now that you do have 1and1 working properly, does your info sync as fast as it did for 4smartphone?

4SmartPhone vs 1and1

I can't give a comparison between the two because I never used 1and1's service, but I can say that I am extremely pleased with 4SmartPhone's PRO service.

right now it works as it should be. However, in the morning I had problems receiving emails over the air. That might have been unrelated though...

You need to have IE6.x+ in with firewall exceptions for the site otherwise you will have no access to the right click function. The page is designed with VM in mind and require certain software components to work properly. I like OWA a lot since it reacts well. As for 1and1, I picked them over some other ones due to their flexibility. You could add multiple exchange accounts and handle multiple sites from a single console. The speeds on 1and1 are pretty nice and I can get pretty good speed for synchronization as well as RPC over HTTP. Nothing beats having your own cluster but hey, if you can't afford it or don't want to bother with it, outsource!!!!
