Lightbulb FAQ!- Getting Ringers/Pictures on your phone! Read this before asking questions!

Sticky??

This faq was started by VeXed and is being updated and reposted.
GAGIN Related FAQ v2.0

This FAQ is updated and maintained on the Howard Forums.
http://www.howardforums.com/ -- check the Verizon forum.

You can always find the latest files here:
http://www.foursevenfive.com/module...sdownload&sid=1
sponsored by whysanity at
http://www.foursevenfive.com/

As it aims to be as broad-based as possible, instructions for specific phones
won't be covered. Scour the Howard Forums and search the web for more info
for your particular phone.
Before I start I just want to point out that you should always keep one thing in mind?even thought later on in a tutorial it might say to do otherwise, I?m telling you now DONOT DELETE ANYTHING!!!!!!! DONOT DELETE ANYTHING!!!!!!! DONOT DELETE ANYTHING!!!!!!! DONOT DELETE ANYTHING!!!!!!! DONOT DELETE ANYTHING!!!!!!!

Q) Can I send pictures/ringtones to my phone?
A) You can ONLY send pictures and ringtones to BREW enabled phones. So far this includes the VX44000, CDM 9500, and the T720. If you have any phone older than these phones you will NOT be able to send pictures or ringtones to your phone. LASO this is ONLY FOR CDMA Phones, The T720i from AT&T or CINGULAR or ANY GSM PR0VIDER WILL NOT WORK! FOR THAT MATTER IT WILL NOT WORK ON ANY GSM/TDMA PHONE AND THERE IS NO WORK AROUND!!

Q) What do I need to get pictures/ringtones on my phone?
A) You will need GAGIN, you will need a Data cable and WINDOWS 2000 or WIN XP. WINDOWS 98/ME WILL NOT WORK!

Q) Where can I get a data cable? (for T720)
A) You can get the data cable from www.eforcity.com or from radio shack.

Q) I got a data cable from Radio Shack and my phone isn?t being detected/GAGIN isn?t working for me? (for T720)
A) If you got the data cable from Radio Shack you will need to install these drivers, They can be found here.
http://www.futuredial.com/snapsync/...USB_Drivers.zip
http://www.foursevenfive.com/module...sdownload&sid=1

Q) I got a data cable from www.eforcity.com and my phone isn?t being detected/GAGIN isn?t working for me?(for T720)
A) If you downloaded the GAGIN_Complete the drivers are included for the data cable simply run the driver files and accept all changes and restart.
Drivers also available here
http://www.foursevenfive.com/module...sdownload&sid=1

Q) Where can I get GAGIN?
A) You can get it here http://www.foursevenfive.com/module...sdownload&sid=1 or from some of the other mirrors posted below:
http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...15&pagenumber=1

Q) What is GAGIN?
A) GAGIN stands for Get Around "Get It Now" (GIN), a service available
on BREW-enabled wireless phones by Verizon. This is the program that will allow you to get ringtones and pictures on your phone. GAGIN itself is a patch for
Qualcomm's BREWAppLoader.EXE which was designed to load BREW applications
and games to the phone. GAGIN is significant because it was the first
patch to show how the AppLoader could be modified to access to other parts
of the phone's EFS.

Q) How do I use GAGIN?(for T720)
A) READ THE TUTORIAL THAT IS INCLUDED WITH THE GAGIN DOWNLOAD, PLEASE READ ALL OF IT!! DONOT NAME/RENAME FILES USING UPPER CASE, SPACES or Single characters (ie A.mid, B.mid?)

Q) The Mog7 Method in tutorial expired what can I do, is there an alternative?
A) Use the Jaymer Method
1. GET My Tonz with Get it Now(its under Get Tones)
2. When you buy one ringtones it gives u ten free ones...
3. Buy One ringtone($1.50) It downloads the My Tonz Site App. Looks like a CD
4. Select the MyTonz CD looking thing to the right of Shopping Cart
5. Arrow down 2 times to Free Songs press [SELECT].
6. Download all free the FREE ringtones
7. Exit get it now.. You can still go back later
8. Goto Media Center -> My Tones
9. Rename the free tones you downloaded
10. Repeat 4 -9 You can do this OVER and OVER (when your done you can Download the one you paid for).
11. DOWNLOAD THE ONE YOU PAY FOR NOW!!

WHEN RENAMING RINGTONES ON THE PHONE USE ALL LOWERCASE AND NO SPACE?TO BE ABSOLUTELY SAFE USE ONLY NUMBERS WHEN RENAMEING YOUR RINGTONES!

Q) How can I use GAGIN for the 9500?
A) Simply download GAGIN_Justtutorial and DO NOT RUN THE RUNME.EXE, MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT RUN/EXECUTE/DOUBLE CLICK on RUNME.EXE, if you do just press cancel. Simply run brewapploder.exe and you should see the shared directory, in there is a ringers directory. REPLACE the ringers you have downloaded. It will not show the default ringers or the ringers that came with the phone you need to download a few ringers before doing this. More info here:
http://www.cdmangels.com

Q) How can I use GAGIN for the VX4400?
A) Follow ALL the steps in the tutorial included in GAGIN_Justtutorial, there are several more complicated things you need to do to get more ringtone slots, a VX4000 user may want to clarify on this.

Q) I can see my ringers directory but there is nothing in it(its empty)?how do I fix this?
A) This is glitch there are some thing you can do, first make sure you have downloaded atleast ONE ringtones from My Tonz or Modtones(these applications are in the Get It Now service) You cannot replace the ringtones that come with the phone. Try renaming all the ringtones to numbers on the phone (ie 1.mid,2.mid?.).
If you still can?t see the ringtones simply rename the ringtones on your computer to the one in the phone(make sure the ringtones on the phone is all lower caser and does not contain spaces.) ans simply drag them and place them in the ringers directory even though you can?t see them this still works sometimes.

Q) I installed the drivers and I tried all the comm ports 1-4 what can I do?
A) Install the comm. Patch for GAGIN it will allow you to use comm Ports 5-8.
You can download the comm port patch from here http://www.foursevenfive.com/module...sdownload&sid=1 or the mirrors posted here:
http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...5&pagenumber=12

If you still have trouble with this here is how you change your comm Port and check if the modem was detected by your computer

Q) I'm getting an error: "A required .DLL file ..." was not found.
A) You can usually find and download missing .DLL files by doing a web-search.
Make sure you are using Windows 2000 or Windows xp, there is no way around this. If you are using Windows 98/ME the program WILL NOT work.

Q) Its still not working..
A) This has been sometimes shown to work.
Step 1: Unplug phone and plug back in.
Attempt to connect

If failed,

Step 2: Plug in phone.. Turn off phone, turn on phone.
Attempt to connect

If failed,

REBOOT!

Q) How do I check if my phone is on the right com port or is being detected?
A) First make sure you have your phone plugged in to the data cable and that the data cable is plugged into the computer and the you have installed you drivers whether the radio shack drivers from above or the drivers that come with gagin_complete
1. Hold down the windows key and press the pause /break button...OR....press start goto Control Panel and double click on system...now?
2. Click on the HARDWARE tab...
3. click DEVICE MANAGER....
4. click Modems...
5. Double Click on Motorola USB Modem...(if this is not there then your phone is not being detected, try uninstalling all drivers and reinstall all drivers)
6. then in the Motorola USB properties window click the ADVACE tab....
7. Then click the ADVACE PORT SETTINGS Button
8. Change the COM PORT to 1,2,3, or 4(5,6,7, or 8 if you applied the comm. patch) ...
9. Click OK...
10. CLICK OK AGAIN and then
11. EXIT the Program and RESTART you computer..

Q) Where can I get Midis or Gifs?

http://www.musicrobot.com
Nextel (all Nextel midis do work for the t720)
http://www.howardforums.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=80

Q) How can I make/edit ringtones?
A) you can start editing ringtones by converting mp3s to midis, you can find these at www.download.com after you convert to midi(format is 16kb, 16bit, 8mhz , mono, type 0) You can use anvil studio to edit it for free www.anvilstudios.com. You can use this program to convert from type 1 midi to type 0.

Q) How can I make Voice ringers aka Dead Ringers?
A) There is a way to do this and its a bit long so please take a look here.

http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...?threadid=99016 (bal patches)
http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...?threadid=97525 (gagin breakthroughs)

Q) What is EFS?
A) Embedded File System in the phone itself. Its alot like a file system on
a floppy disk, just that the "disk" is not removable. This is all that
the patched AppLoader can currently access.

Q) How big is the EFS on my phone?
A) It varies by phone, but in most cases you can go into the BREW Shop (or GIN
application) and go to Options->Information and it will give you usage
stats.

Q) What are BALpatches?
A) The BREW AppLoader patches are a series of subsequent patches that expand
upon GAGIN's philosophy and also modify the BREW AppLoader to allow more
functionality. They are smaller than the original GAGIN patch since they only deal
with changing those bytes necessary to unlock the extra functionality.

Q) Where can I get BALPatches?
A) the latest patches are available here: http://www.foursevenfive.com/module...sdownload&sid=1

Q) Do I have to apply the GAGIN patch before using any of the BALpatches?
A) No, but it can't hurt. The GAGIN patch has a much more interesting splash
screen than the boring default one in the BREW AppLoader, so why not?

Q) Do I need to apply every BALpatch, or just the latest one?
A) Just the latest one. They are all-inclusive, the latest ones include all
the fixes of all the prior ones, plus possibly some counter-fixes if an
earlier patch was found to be buggy.

Q) What hardware do I need to use this patched software?
A) You need a connectivity cable (either serial or USB-to-serial). In most
cases a generic, inexpensive cable can be used instead of the more
expensive "kits" that come with unnecessary software. All you need is a
driver, which if it doesn't come with the cable, can be freely downloaded
from the web.

Q) What operating systems does the the AppLoader run on?
A) As of currently, it appears that it will only work on Windows NT/2000/XP
since one of the DLLs it requires was compiled in NT protected mode.

Q) The patched AppLoader freezes after asking for COM port. Whats wrong?
A) Make sure the cable is securely plugged into both the phone and the
computer. Make sure your driver baud rate settings and your phone's
settings match. Make sure you are using the correct COM port. Leave
the default Browse Directory as "brew" to test, since other directories (like "user") may not have been created yet and will also cause the AppLoader to lockup
if it can't find them.

Q) So what exactly can I do with it now that it works?
A) You can backup many of your important settings and downloaded BREW
apps/software for safe-keeping in case something happens to your phone.
You can also customize your phone by accessing different directories
in the phone's EFS, downloading files, modifying them, then uploading them
back to the phone.

Q) How do I download files from the phone within the patched AppLoader?
A) Right-click on a file and select "Copy From Device..."

Q) How do I upload files to the phone within the patched AppLoader?
A) In most cases you can just drag-and-drop one file at a time. If that
doesn't work, try right-clicking on the white area and select New->File and
specify the file that way.

Q) What directories in the phone are important?
A) While they vary from phone to phone, the most important directories are:

brew: BREW apps/games.
pim: Phonebook data.
user: Custom ringers, wall-papers, etc.

BALpatch lets you change the Browse Directory by simply re-patching.
Eventually you should be able to view the phone's EFS in its entirety by
just patching once and being done with it.

The purpose...................

As one of the people directly involved in investigating and discovering some of the patches to the brewAppLoader, I submit my comments on the patches that I have made and the reason for my activities in supporting this effort......

I believe that it is my right as the owner of my phone to be able to put my own ringers and my own images into my phone AT MY OWN RISK. If I do anything which disables my phone, it's MY problem. In the process of taking my chances, I've found a number of useful patches and I have been and will continue to provide the details of those patches to this community for all those who are interested. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

I do not believe that anyone including myself has the right to illegally copy games, applications, ringers, images, or any other content which is not their own property. Brew apps that you get from the "Get It Now" service ARE NOT YOUR PR0PERTY and copying them is piracy. IF YOU CHOOSE TO DO THIS, YOU DO IT WITHOUT MY ENDORSEMENT. I will not assist anyone in such endeavors. Period. Don't ask me how, don't talk to me about doing it; I do not advocate or support software piracy!

I am not opposed to Verizon Wireless charging people for GIN applications or content. They have that right. I personally believe they are missing out on a huge opportunity to have enormous user satisfaction and support by providing technical details to their developer community (of which I am a part of). I am a registered developer. I have asked a number of times for information and support over the last six weeks and have yet to receive a single reply from the Verizon developer support group (see http://developers.verizonwireless.com/ for more information). They are missing the boat, and in the mean time I've been supporting this group rather than working for them. Just think of how prolific I would be with their support (as opposed to without)!!!!

There's my two cents worth, take it or leave it............

Cioni2k: Whats up with you, isn't his a forum where you can ask questions?

I've looked around the forum for information, but it all seems to be US based. I read one guy had fried his phone, but another said his worked fine, with some adjustments!

Get a grip, TIT!

Here's a quick update for LG VX4400 users (and possibly others) in case these threads slip below radar.

To customize your ringers:

http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...threadid=100423

To customize your wallpapers:

http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...threadid=101737

Some of the information may indeed apply to others as well.

I'm seeing this alot:

Q) I can't copy certain files, I'm getting an error.

A) Make you you are running the latest BALpatch -- download the latest one from the bottom of this thread:

http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...&threadid=99016

Also, some phones need to be in "offline mode" which means shutting it down so the phone's operating system isn't active, but still powered on (i.e., in the charger) so that the data connectivity still works.

My PM box has been flooded with messages like this:

Quote:
VeXed, thanks for all your hard work. I'm a newbie, and am having trouble loading new wallpaper onto my 4400. I connected the phone to my computer using the RadioShack cable and the Profile USB driver. When I run GAGIN, I get a 'sound' directory with a 'ringer' subdirectory. There are no other folders listed. When I run balpatch, I can't browse the phone at all. My only choices for browsing are the various drives on my computer, not the cell phone.

I've asked this question several times on the forum, but no one has given me the answer to my question. How do I get balpatch to see my phone? Where is my 'BREW' directory?

Basically, I'm looking for answers to some fundamental questions that I can't find answers to in the FAQ or in the rest of the forum.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Re-read the FAQ folks. S-L-O-W-L-Y.

BALpatch is a PATCH for the BREW AppLoader (B.A.L.) You use the AppLoader to browse the phone, NOT the patch.

I suppose these sorts of questions should be expected when trying to make something easy enough to use for the masses...

Q) How do I know what COM port to use?

A) If you're using a serial cable that plugs directly into a COM (serial) port, it should just be COM1 if you only have one COM port in the back of your machine.

If you are using a USB cable, make sure you have installed your USB driver for the cable! Upon doing so, you should see it in your device manager: Right-click on My Computer, go to Properties, then to Hardware tab, then click on the Device Manager button. It should be under Ports.

You should see the name of the port in parenthesis (e.g. (COM4) ) to the right of the USB-to-Serial Comm Port. If you don't see the COM port listed to the right of the device, try double-clicking on the device then go to Port Settings tab, then double-click on Advanced. You should see it there on the bottom. Change it if it conflicts with another device.

Once you know you've got the right COM port, if you're still have trouble connecting to your phone, make sure the Baud Rate (bits per second) setting matches the one in your phone. 38400 is usually the default.

midi transfer help

I am sort of new to this so please bare with me. I have a t720 and i got the cable for it and i got GAGIN. I thought i figured out how to use it by I guess i havent yet. I was able to transfer gif files to my phone and view them on my phone. When i try to send midi files however, there is a problem. I purchased the "i cant get no satisfaction" ringtone from modtones. Then backed it up on to my pc. Then i deleted it from my phone and renamed the midi file i had on my pc and tried to send the one on my pc to my phone but it didnt work. On GAGIN it showed that the ringtone was transferred and it showed it in the ringtones folder but it never showed up on my phone. I even tried to just delete and resend the same tone and that didnt even work. I am also a little confused about what brew is exactly. Maybe my phone isnt brew but then i probably wouldnt be able to send the gif files, which i can. Anyway as you can see i am in need of some instructing so if someone can help me i would really appreciate it.

Rebel:

BREW is short for Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless application and device development. It is a proprietary application platform owned by Qualcomm, who incidently owns CDMA technology as well. Basically, programmer pay Qualcomm money to be able to develop BREW applications. Then these application are offered to customers with BREW enabled phones. Verizon does this through their GIN service (Get it Now). BREW's main competition is JAVA (J2ME etc) which programmers prefer since it is open source and free. You can go to Qualcomm's website to find out further info on BREW.

As for your problem with GAGIN. Here is a hint... DO NOT DELETE ANYTHING off the phone. Just replace the files. You will find how to do this in past postings and instructions with the program. Make sure the name of the file is the same as on the phone; including Case (lower/upper). You need to replace the tone you downloaded with the one that you want. After you drag the new song onto the phone via GAGIN, then you can rename it through your phones's interface... _NOT_ through the GAGIN program. Rename through the phone.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for your help vodka but now i need to get another ringtone on in order to replace it. Do you know of any places on GIN where they give you like a free demo tone or anything like that; just so i can replace it with one of my tones.
